The reason why I am so terrified of other Christians

Nov 05, 2008 15:39

Sometimes I wonder if I should even be calling myself a Christian anymore.

So, my friend doortoriver made this post about being a Christian and voting for Obama: http://doortoriver.livejournal.com/464247.html. A good, well thought-out argument on why she was voting Obama.

She posted this in her facebook yesterday after we found out Obama won:

Furious at me, or furious at the other person...or something else?

certainly not you. just general knee-jerk religious right superiority. people who don't feel compelled to look from any perspective but their own & cast judgment accordingly. disgusting.

I didn't read a lot of this, cause it'll just piss me off, but I have just have a few things to say. First: Separation of church and state, it's a good thing. And no one has the right to take the rights away from people. I'm pro-choice and for gay marriage. Why? Cause I have gay friends, and they want to get married and be happy (or miserable) then let them. And the world isn't black and white, there are reasonable reasons for abortion. Babies should be wanted, not expected. Plus, look at the poor girls who have a baby at 15, and abandon it :( And the baby dies, and the moms go to jail for murder. It could have been avoided, and the suffering avoided... I know that people won't agree with me, and I'm not here to start anything, just expressing my opinion. ^^;;; I just...wish people weren't so self-righteous :( It makes the world sad.

I tried not to insert my own stances into this, and I completely understand you not reading it all: it's very long, and kind of ranty.

I'm with you: I don't believe in discriminating against someone based on sexuality. The Church might want marriage to be a man and woman, but the State cannot force that on it's citizens. Marriage to the State should be the union of two people.

Anti-abortion laws put moral codes of conduct on women's sexuality and bodies, which is discriminatory - it's wrong! If someone is pro-life, then they can keep their babies, but they cannot force another woman, who is different in every way to do the same. Not everyone has the same moral codes of conduct.

Someone could accuse us of being too 'liberal'...this isn't liberalism. This is standing up for the rights of men and women, and equality. Tolerance. Acceptance.

This is why church and state should be separate. Then you don't have these issues. I'm Christian too (Catholic, specifically) and OVERALL I wanted Obama to win. I'd want someone like him to run in Canada as well. Sure, not all his policies would match mine - no one does. But you have to look at the big picture when it comes to this stuff.

I'm almost certain that's what I was trying to get at, but failing at articulating...my mind is in sexuality mode due to a paper for that class being due very soon.

I guess I'm weary of those who think Church and State should be one. It explodes my head...I want to take those people and throw them into my sociology classes, make them read what I have, and pray that they get a bit of sense knocked into their heads.

Yeah, those two scared me, too. The thing is...

she's not applying Christianity the way it is in the Bible. It may have been written by men, but when you actually look at it - not some crackpot's interpretation - it's wonderful.

The problem is people taking stuff and just... running insane with it. @_@ I am proud to be a Christian because of CHRIST, not because of other idiots who might use that name.

XD Glad I'm not the only one who went "WTF" when I saw those responses.

I didn't want to post anything against what they said on your facebook - it was too long and would be pointless anyway.

And yes! I agree with you - the Bible can be absolutely wonderful. I know we talked about this in your journal, about the crazies...and that's the stuff that scares me. To the bone scares me.

*hugs*

I'm also glad I wasn't alone in a negative reaction...just...if she had any concept of what she was saying, especially about Guantanamo Bay...it hurts my heart.

Oh my word. That part was just... so horrifying. @_@

And you know, it's doubly weird because I AM trying to find an agent and get published. Even if it takes a few years, I have to be careful with this sort of thing, because if I look like a crazy, they won't want to come near me. XD

So... trying very hard to sound sane in the face of nutjobs. *laughs*

Aww, don't worry - you're certainly -not- a crazy. Not just trying to say that, but everything you write is well thought out and well argued...you proact instead of react.

*hug*

Oooo, people like that Christian zealot make me so mad! And as a woman, the abortion issue is paramount for me. I agree, telling a woman that she can or can not have an abortion IS controlling her sexuality. It makes me fucking sick when someone's sexuality, that does not hurt anyone (whether a man or woman's, adult's or teen's) is controlled because someone has different views. Grrrr.

If you're pro-life, great, don't abort your babies, but DO NOT take that right away from a different woman in a different situation.

EXACTLY!!! And no MAN, especially, ever has the right.

I think we're very fortunate to live where we do - we don't have to worry about this unless Harper gets majority, which he can't now. He called his election early, trying to get his majority which didn't happen, but also so he stays in power during the economic 'crisis'...I think he's got another 4 years now, unless he steps down. Harper wants to change abortion laws and outlaw gay marriage. Luckily, when he tried to bring the gay marriage bill up for re-consideration, Parliament voted it down. I don't think he's tried with abortion.

Gay marriage has been legal in British Columbia for about 2 years. Has anything changed? Nope. Not really. Society is the same - it just kept on ticking like nothing happened.

I'm completely pro-choice. Would I personally get an abortion? Probably not, but I know people who have, and I'm completely okay with that.

That's what pro-choice means--choosing what you'd do. Just because a person personally would not have an abortion, why force their choice on others? How would they like it if someone forced them to have an abortion, taking away their choice?
