Mar 15, 2010 22:21

This week's beer theme is American made pale Belgian-Triple style ales. Beers are Stone Vertical Epic 08.08.08 and Avery's Salvation Ale.

Also, I'll have an Irish Lager for St. Patrick's Day.

I've had good fortune with the Avery line. It's been awhile since I've had any of their ales, but I've always preferred "The Reverend" personally. I've long wanted to try their ale called "The Beast" but haven't found it yet.

I do like Avery. vindonnus March 16 2010, 14:55:16 UTC
But usually have found their competition stronger in the niches... But I have yet to find a beer from them that wasn't really enjoyable.

Kell's Lager (Beer review) vindonnus March 18 2010, 03:05:58 UTC
It's a little hazy and a straw-gold color with a thick, sticky, head on the pour. This beer is good. Like... really good in ways that lagers usually aren't. It's VERY flavorful, with apple overtones and a bit of a hoppy bite and it even has a decent body. The hop bitterness is a little much, actually, and makes this an easy beer to pour back, but a more difficult beer to savor. I give it an A-.

I was wondering if the beer tasting is still on Fridays and if so what time and address? I have a free evening and would love to see you and anyone else that shows up. :)

Vertical Epic - More hops than I'm used to in a Belgian Style ale. It has the usual complexity, however with a load of crispness. It's a golden and hazy colored beer. It also has a bit more bite and less sweetness than many Belgian triples... But without much alcohol flavor, which is probably hidden by that rich hop bite. I give it a B.

Salvation - A good beer, clear and dark golden yellow. It's a little sweeter and less hoppy than the Vertical Epic. It's very wine-like with fruity undertones with grape undertones. I give it an A.

Flying Dog Kerberos - Yet another tasty beer. I really like Belgian Ales. It has vanilla and chocolate undertones with a good strong dose of sweetness. I really like this beer, even if it's a little less complex than the others. I'll give it a B+.
