An early farewell to TOME

Jul 12, 2012 20:03

After due consideration, I have decided to explain publicly why I will not participate in the TOME awards and why I will encourage others to boycott them as well.

I both read and write erotica...and I agree with you completely on every point. I will not participate in ToME (or any similar awards). May I link your post to make more gen ficers aware of the situation and perhaps involved in the planning? I also noticed a very definite bias in regard to what genres of fandom were involved in the planning.

I personally do not wish to give input or be involved but others who may wish to participate need to speak up now.

Also of note: there is talk of in future allowing art. If there are no ratins and everything goes...well wont that be a legal nightmare?

Link to your heart's content, NiRi.
The artwork was another point I raised earlier in the debate.

Please wait a little longer!

The choice between having "no-ratings" and having ratings will be up for a vote soon! Please do not drive away all those who might oppose that option before they have a chance to express their will.

Dear Dreamflower, the ratings issue is only secondary. The decision has already been made to allow incitement to racial hatred and fascist propaganda, and when that dawned on me, there was no turning back.

An lj-cut needs a closing /lj-cut to function.

I just thought you'd like to know.

When I look at my journal, the cut is there with the "read more" option, so it seems to have worked.

Then you have an extra "lj-cut" opening. It isn't supposed to be visible on the post.

As the first person to put forward the suggestion that the awards do not need their own rating system, I rather object to being given the blanket description of 'one of the erotica lobby' - I do not think this is a particularly accurate description of my writing as a whole ( ... )

Wombat, I most emphatically did not mean you by the "erotica lobby." I have actually quoted your "Pure Morning" as an example of a story with sexually explicit content which I found completely justified form a literary point of view. I was referring to the people who, when the issues of courtesy towards the readers, participation of teenagers etc were brought up, dismissed all of these and put the burden entirely on the readers, which, as NiRi points out below, is a hassle to many readers and will discourage them from participating, thus giving further advantages to those who don't mind adult-rated stories. These are the same people who shout down my attempts to express my opinion with cries of "Inclusiveness!" and deny my right to use the term "porn."

I most emphatically did not mean you by the "erotica lobby."

But I was the person who put forward the proposal. I did not propose anything involving any of the things you mentioned in your post - I simply see no point in having to convert the ratings on my stories into yet another set of ratings.

If you go and participate in the poll you can then see the results as they are so far. I seriously suggest that you do.

Thanks for posting these very valid concerns. I've a current "Wait and See" policy. I don't want the anything goes lobby to have everything their own way by standing back from voting in the polls ect, but I do share your concern. I utterly refuse to read or write objectionable material that could corrupt and deprave.

I do, though, post on anything goes sites like LJ, and take great care with what I read.

I feel ratings are essential, once you start reading the harm is done and the objectionable material has found another reader.

I wholeheartedly agree that the awards should cater for and welcome teenage writers.

As long as stories were rated and the info was easily accessible, I don't think that would be an issue. But what I've seen from the No Rating is that if an author chooses NOT to rate, that's allowed; or if it's posted somewhere where ratings aren't required, then that's okay too. For a lot of readers, no it's not okay and will affect readership and participation. Not that my opinion matters...

I simply suggest that as all stories posted on archives have to have some sort of rating, which can be seen once you click the link on the awards reading list, there is no need to have it recalculated to fit into a different system simply to be displayed on that reading list. No, not every archive takes you to a summary page with a rating. Authors who post at LJ don't always link to the summary/rating or even rate. Stories of Arda you can link to the meat of the story without seeing a rating or summary. So does Faerie. That puts a lot of burden on the reader to go searching for that info. Why not just require authors to list the rating they use ( ... )

I often forget to rate on LJ and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I feel ratings are essential.

Me too. Hence my being on "Team Ratings."
