By now, Aloysius is probably somewhat aware his girlfriend is something of a crazy person, prone to keeping secrets just because she can and impulsive gestures. It is, Maria guesses, relatively late in the evening--approaching dinnertime, and after it for some people who take supper early. The fact that Aloysius isn't answering his home phone tells her that he is probably still at work, and Nouria is with a sitter, which means she is free to blindside him merrily for a little while. This is, Maria thinks, starting to become a ritual.
Not a bad one! But the weekly trek to Aloysius's house with herself, her overnight bag, and her baby in tow is one she believes will continue for a while. Maria has the good sense (for once in her life) to phone ahead and check with Caroline to see whether Aloysius is going to be 'at lunch' or at least conveniently alone in his office at some point this afternoon. Sunday morning is surprisingly busy. Maria gets up early to take care of Nouria, and then curls back up in bed until the sun rises. She expects Aloysius will be up before she's gotten out of his bed a second time, but she's sleepy, and doesn't much want to be roused yet. As arranged, Maria arrives at her place in Chicago within ten minutes. She has her pinpoint in hand, a cardigan tossed loosely over her shoulders and only partially buttoned, and a mess of boxes surrounding her. The last of these has just been waiting for her, though.
