In this world, each and every person possesses a silver locket. This heart-shaped metallic ornament represented each person’s emotions, changing its tint of color according to its owner’s feelings. Its gold chain embedded in its owner’s neck, the locket dangles safely on pale skin between the collarbones.

The locket had a special purpose for its existence. It knew every person’s destined partner, the other half of him or her that would make them a whole. But it would open only by the touch of the one a person was fated to be with, nobody else.

In a magnificently beautiful kingdom, where animals galloped and grazed in the fields, forests thrived and flowers blossomed, and villagers chatted merrily in the markets, lived a well-respected royal family. Noble, well-respected and loving towards their people, the king, queen, and their only son, the prince, lived in a splendid castle.

The prince often stayed in the castle, and the villagers rarely saw him. But what they knew was that he liked to look at himself a lot and dress sumptuously and live an extravagant life. Some thought he was spoiled, drowning in all the luxury he had. His name was Heechul, the prince who was prettier than all the maidens in the land.

Many young women longed to be the one who opened his locket, to be the princess who was destined to be with the handsome prince. So when the king announced that the prince needed a wife and young damsels could enter the castle to attempt at Heechul’s locket, the country buzzed with excitement and young girls prettied themselves, each full of confidence that they would be the opener of the prince’s locket.

The big day arrived and women from all over the nation lined up to enter the palace gates. Many were even from foreign lands, not missing a chance to take a chance at their destiny. Guards kept the crowd in control, occasionally breaking up fights between possessive girls.

“For the millionth time, why do I have to do this?” Heechul sighed as attendants adjusted his fancy attire. Pulling at his collar, he groaned as he saw the mob of well-dressed females outside the gates, trying not to mess up their outfits as they pushed and waved up at his window, trying to catch his attention. “Doesn’t fate just like…. Bring two destined people together? Why bother wasting my time for days for different girls to come and harass my chest?”

“Well, your majesty,” Sungmin chuckled as he set down a platter of tea for Heechul, “your father is really looking forward to your marriage. Just bear with this awhile. Soon you’ll find the one that you are meant to be with.”

“I doubt that,” Heechul scoffed as he held his locket in his hands. It was glowing a faint color of light green.

“It’s time now,” Sungmin waved, beckoning Heechul towards the main hall. “It wouldn’t be too good if you were late.”

Heechul stood up warily and followed Sungmin. “I don’t get why I have to marry. I can be single.”

“You can’t just grow old without having any children, who’ll take over this land?”

“Seriously, as a best friend, I can’t believe you still don’t understand me,” Heechul eyed the man beside him. “I really don’t care.”

Sungmin chuckled. “I’m not your friend, just your personal butler,” he said, while Heechul rolled his eyes.

“So you call hanging out with me all the time and sharing secrets is anything that anyone could do with me? You even know me better than my parents.”

Sungmin grinned and pushed open a door for Heechul to enter the main hall.

It was decorated wonderfully with red silk tapestry, gold lining, and royal banners. Sparkling chandeliers brightened the area, and gold statues lined the walls that were covered in fancy wallpaper. At the side stood tables of delicious delicacies while a glass fountain was situated beside it, dolphins spouting out jets of water. Heechul walked toward the center to his seat casually, picking up a crème brulee on the way and leaving Sungmin to gape in amazement at the lavish furnishings and décor.

Heechul sat in his throne with an irritated expression, two guards at his side. After the king welcomed the “stunning” ladies and their “elegance and patience”, girls started to approach Heechul one by one, acting repulsively sweet and batting their eyelashes at him. Sungmin had to stifle his laughter when one pounced directly on Heechul, scaring the prince while the guards managed to hold her down.  Amidst the ruckus, Heechul turned to look at Sungmin with a horrified expression on his face. Sungmin smirked at him and held a mock thumbs-up to the girl that was still thrashing wildly in the guards’ arms. Sending a death glare towards Sungmin, Heechul dragged a finger slowly across his throat.

The day went on and more and more girls came excitedly to touch Heechul’s locket. Then they would leave under despair, rejected by the cold unmoving locket at Heechul’s  neck. When the last walked out of the hall, crying and moaning, Heechul immediately stood up and walked towards Sungmin. Sungmin flashed him a reassuring smile before receiving a punch to his stomach.

“OW! What was that for?” He sputtered, doubling over.

“That was for earlier and also for dragging me into this horror,” Heechul huffed and walked away, Sungmin having no choice but following him. Heechul walked into the dining room and grabbed a few bottles of beer before heading towards the veranda.

“What are you doing? You know you’re not supposed to drink!” Sungmin reminded him.

“I’m having the worst day of my life so if you try to stop me, you know what’s going to happen.”

Sungmin gulped. Making Heechul angry was not a good choice. He left him and went into his room. A few hours later, deep into the night, he heard echoes of loud discordant singing from the hallways. He cringed and made his way towards the source, spotting Heechul walking drunkenly and screeching his lungs out with his “singing”.

Heechul slumped to the ground, and grinned lopsidedly at Sungmin, cheeks red and holding his bottle of wine up. “Drink with me, Sungmin.”

Sungmin shook his head and took the bottle away from Heechul. He knelt beside him and said, “Your majesty, you’ve gotten too drunk. I’ll get you back to your room.” He slung Heechul’s arm around his shoulder and hoisted him up, slowly carrying him back to the prince’s room.

“Whyyyyyyy? Nooo, let me dowwwn.” Heechul mumbled as he tried to fight Sungmin’s grasp. “I wanna drink some moreee.”

Sungmin didn’t answer him, ignoring Heechul’s slurring protests as he carried him into his room. He laid the drunken man down on the king sized bed and stood up to leave.

A hand suddenly grabbed his wrist and Sungmin turned to see Heechul trying to sit up. With a grunt, he pulled Sungmin down to sit on the bed side him. No one said a word as Heechul’s intense gaze bore into Sungmin’s skull.

“Your majesty…” Sungmin winced as the grip tightened and pained his wrist. “You’re hurting me….”

Heechul remained silent but didn’t slacken his hold. He moved closer to the other, bearing a strong stench of alcohol. Their faces were only a few inches apart and Sungmin stiffened, not daring to move, when someone spoke.

“Kiss me.”
