The two words resounded through the room. Sungmin paused and stared in shock at the older man when he realized what Heechul was saying. He couldn't get himself to move, he just sat there as he felt the warm breath of the other on his face. His body betrayed him when he failed to back away as Heechul leaned towards him.
He felt a pair of soft lips on his own, tasting like wine.
Heechul’s arms wrapped around Sungmin’s neck while he deepened the kiss. Sungmin widened his eyes and sat there stupidly, unmoving and still startled at the situation. But after a while, he gave in to the warmth Heechul was giving him, shyly responding back to the movement of the other’s lips. He had longed for this to happen for longer than he could remember. Shivers shot through his body as he felt his temperature rise. Heechul ran a hand through Sungmin’s hair, pushing their heads together even more. He had dreamt of this for so many times, and his heart was now bursting of happiness. Whenever he was around Heechul, he had to suppress his feelings and try to act normal. But now Heechul was kissing him, his arms around Sungmin’s neck and………
Sungmin fell back onto the bed, Heechul hovering above him. They were both panting, faces flushed and gasping for breath. Sungmin’s brain clicked as he realized what he was doing. He pushed Heechul off of him frantically and jumped off the bed. Keeping his head down, he stammered an apology to Heechul. He sensed a faint red light out of the corner of his eye, and gasped.
There it was, opened and glowing in a dark shade of red. Heechul’s locket.
Sungmin couldn’t believe what he was seeing. His mind went blank and his mouth fell open. Was it because of me? He thought wildly. His hands trembled as he recalled his fingers brushing something cold when he pushed the drunken man off him. He stared at Heechul, who was snoring soundly in his bed.
Why is it me? Is it…. No. This isn’t right. I can’t let anyone know about this. Sungmin, still shaking, approached the sleeping figure and cautiously closed the locket with a push of his finger.
Click. The locket snapped shut.
Sungmin turned and ran out. Face still burning, he hit himself on the head while running back blindly to his room.
What the hell was that? Sungmin screamed in his mind, balling his fists. What was he thinking? Doing something like that with Heechul, Kim Heechul, the prince that he was serving. He ran into his room and slammed the door shut, leaning with his back pressed against the door. His chest heaved up and down as he fought to control the tears that were about to spill from his eyes. What just happened was too overwhelming. He didn’t understand. His heart did long for Heechul, but why did Heechul’s locket open at his touch?
Sungmin’s locket was a dark shade of purple.
He walked unsteadily to his bed, lying down and hugging his pillow, staining it with his tears. A million thoughts ran through his head, keeping him afflicted for the rest of the night.
The next morning Sungmin woke miserably, having waking up multiple times during the night and dreading to see Heechul. He dragged himself out of bed, tried to clear his mind by washing his face, and got ready both physically and emotionally to face the prince.
Sungmin took a deep breath before heading to Heechul’s room. Fear was creeping up in his chest. His feet stopped at the door. He didn’t dare to knock. What will Heechul think of me as? Will he remember what happened yesterday? What if--
The door suddenly swung open, presenting a sleepy Heechul who was yawning and rubbing his eyes. Sungmin’s heart jumped at the sight and he bowed quickly as a greeting.
“What’s up with you? Being all respectful and stuff. Bring me breakfast will you?” Heechul gave him a small squeeze on the shoulder before scratching his head and heading back into his room.
Sungmin stood rooted to his spot, not knowing what to feel. Did Heechul not remember anything? A muffled, “Hey, why are you still standing there?” startled him back to his senses and Sungmin hurriedly went to the kitchen to serve up Heechul’s breakfast from the cook.
Carrying the tray, Sungmin treaded carefully to avoid knocking its contents over. He reached Heechul’s room and set it softly down on a table, avoiding the other’s eyes.
He heard a painful hiss and saw Heechul rubbing his temples and frowning. “I have such a bad headache. Did I drink too much last night?”
Sungmin gulped. “Ye-yes, your majesty. A lot.”
“Oh.”
“……Do you remember anything?”
“No…….. no I don’t. I don’t think so.”
Sungmin sighed in relief. He felt as if ropes that strained and constricted his heart were loosened. He made way to Heechul’s massive closet. “You’re going to have to eat faster since more people are coming to see you.”
There was a loud clang of tableware.
“I am NOT going today. I’ve had enough of that.”
Sungmin grimaced. “You’ll have to.”
“No!”
“Just do it for me, alright? It’s I who will get punished if you don’t go.”
Silence.
“Humph. Fine. But only for one more day. Dad isn’t going to make me endure this kind of torture anymore.”
Sungmin smiled gratefully as Heechul munched gloomily on his toast.
The same procedure as yesterday went on, Heechul sitting at his throne and Sungmin standing to the side, watching him. Sungmin observed as the prince started to relax and converse with each of the women, often flirting with the ones whose beauty stood out from the others. Sungmin tried to feel happy for Heechul, maybe he could meet the girl he was destined with. But he just couldn’t bring himself to be when his chest was aching like stabs to his heart.
But one by one, each of them left, face downcast and disappointed. Heechul turned to glance at Sungmin, sending a questioning expression at Sungmin’s downcast one. Sungmin shook his head and managed to break out a weak smile, convincing the other that he was okay. Heechul nodded, returned a smile, and went back to chatting with the girls.
No one noticed the small crack that formed on Sungmin’s locket, while changing its color to a tint of brown.
