Yes, I felt it. No, there's no damage near me

6.9 in Baja CaliforniaIt certainly lasted quite a while, though, and built pretty steadily. I did feel compelled to get away from windows and my monitor was swaying quite a bit at the peak. I've also noticed at least one small and very brief aftershock. I suspect things will be pretty rough closer to the epicenter ( Read more... )

I was in San Diego, California when it happened and it was intense there. The people there were funny though. All acting the world was ending. You would think people that live in Southern California would be used to earthquakes by now!?

hehe. It depends. We do get a lot of transplants here. Even natives sometimes forget. Earthquakes, while common, are not quite as common as some regional natural disasters. If we had earthquakes as often as some areas get tornadoes or hurricanes, we might be more blaze about it. ;-) Most of the people in my complex seemed more amused than anything; at least the ones who were reacting audibly.

I would think so! Up here in the Northwest we heard it was 7.2, which I believe is about the same magnitude as the Haiti shaker earlier this year. I was going to give you a call but thought better of it given the time and so waited for you to blog it.

The initial report was 6.9 but it was later revised up to 7.2. Usually they get revised down after further review but they almost always change. The last thing I read was two dead, a few hundred injured, at least six homes burned in Mexicali and forty-five buildings collapsed or partially collapsed in Baja. There have been more than five hundred aftershocks in the 3-4 range since Sunday.
