What I missed

When I was a teenager and depressed, all that helped was music.  I stopped reading, I didn't really care about anything else, I lost almost all my friends (well, they were asshole teenagers anyway), I slept all the time, but I got my shit together to go out and hear music, because that was the only thing that still made me feel good.  The problem ( Read more... )

It's hard, isn't it? I suppose the best I can offer is that the bad stuff can sometimes be the foundation of the good. If I hadn't been lonely and isolated in my teen years, I wouldn't have read and written so much, wouldn't have done so well in exams, got a university job, become a writer, etc.

Do you know Lamb's "Dream Children"?

I don't regret the reading and writing--I'm with you there. I wouldn't know who I was, otherwise. But I regret the self-imposed misery and the bad romantic choices...

I really hope this is the year I finally visit NYC -- I've never been! But I'm back in Ottawa for the next few years, so that's at least one full ocean's worth of obstacles removed!

Congratulations on your happy baby news! I don't have a baby icon, so have a toddler icon instead.

As for the rest, I had a similar trajectory in my teens and twenties where it just wasn't happening for me, so I have some small inkling of how you feel about your youth.
