If they don't have enough common courtesy to feel like they should keep a public restroom clean for the benefit of their fellow users, then the should feel guilty

That's kind of what I meant...but, I don't know about men's restrooms, but it's a rarity to find a clean women's restroom anymore because people don't have the common courtesy to clean up after themselves. It might be cost-saving for the airport to keep someone in there to make people feel the guilt they should feel. Unfortunately, too many people don't care these days.
I also hate bathroom attendants. I don't even like when there's someone else just washing their hands next to me, much less someone who expects to be paid to be there, helping me do things I would rather do myself. I figure, don't tip them; then maybe they'll become obsolete.
I confess, unless it's a self-service kiosk, I always wait until someone calls or motions. If the counter person isn't ready for me, they can get pissy, and I'd rather just wait a few moments to make sure.

See unline Tracie, I know exactly what you mean with the checkin lines. The self serve ones especially. They all light up and say "Press any key to begin" or something like that if they're ready for a new person. The ones that are closed say ... Yep "Closed". And people still stand in line not walking up to the ones that are ready. It's probably a bit annoying, but I actually point out the ones that are open to people in front of me and tell them they can just walk up to it and check in. I'm even considering next time I'm in line and all that's standing between me and one of those open ones is a crow control belt thing, just ducking under and going up to one of them. I'm not sure if they don't notice them, or they don't know they can just walk up to them, but this is one of the only places that there are usually 5-10 open kiosks and still a huge line of people.
