Sleet pinged off my head while I brushed piles of soft snow off my car yesterday morning. All I could think was how strange it was that I was sitting outside in a t-shirt on Sunday afternoon at Starbucks with Heather

Is she the type who would like those party games? I didn't have any games at my shower. Just some good food and family, and friends of the family. (when you start planning for the shower, find out what foods she is particularly fond of or has any aversions to-VERY important)
I know she was recently planning a shower for her sister and was all about the games. She even likes the one with the melted candy bars in diapers, which I just can't. But I'll focus on the food, definitely. Thanks for the tips. :)
The nice thing about babies that are not your own baby is you can be completely ignorant about the baby stuff when he first arrives. I think most parents prefer it, actually, because no one likes someone stepping in and knowing more about caring for babies-- especially their baby-- than they do. Visit Heather with the baby for a while before you're left alone with him and let her show you what to do, and it will make her feel more confident as a mom (: Plus that way you'll know you're doing it the way she would prefer it be done.
If you're curious for some baby shower ideas, I did a post about my friend's last April. It was pretty classic Midwestern baby shower, I'd say, but maybe some of the decor and games gives you some ideas. Most of the "games" for us were just competitive quiz things based on baby-related topics like identifying lines of nursery rhymes, baby animal names, and The Price is Right for baby stuff.
Yeah, I'm hoping just being around the baby and parents together will make a lot of things apparent.
Thanks for the shower ideas! I looked at your linked post and it looked like a nice time. I think the nursery rhymes game sounds especially cute, maybe because I know I would totally own at it.
I did not have a baby shower so I can't offer any advice on that. The line about the cat made me laugh. My boyfriend's cat is actually exactly like a baby which is pretty cute.
As for the worrying about not knowing anything about babies - you already have more experience with them than I did before I had my own child so that's a good start haha. I had held one baby for a total of about 5 seconds and I hated it. They're not that difficult really, you just kind of know what to do. :) Your friend will probably tell you everything you need to know a million times before you babysit anyway. She'll understand that you're nervous.
Thankfully, she knows/understands that I'm not a baby person. I think as long as I see her and her husband together with the baby, some things will fall into place. I'm sure she'll just fill me in on the rest, stuff like heating milk and whatnot, but it's the little details like that I'm nervous about. I just imagine calling my sister every few minutes, asking, "Now what?!"
I feel the same way with procreating friends. I'd love a chapter in My Friend Is Procreating - For Dummies covering what questions I should be asking. I'd also like the sequel: Age Appropriate Gifts for Babies

See, like the blanket thing? I didn't know that. I thought maybe one light baby blanket. There are so many details I don't know! Aaaaaah!
I'll have to trail Heather a little before I do any babysitting, for sure.
