It didn't occur to me until the captain had switched off the fasten seatbelts sign that 3 months in a new place where I don't know anyone nor have anything but the vaguest idea as to academics is a particularly intimidating idea to most people.  Luckily, I am ridiculously outgoing and occasionally impervious to awkward silences and dodgy looks.  ( Read more... )

yay adventuring! I'm so excited to hear about all that you're doing. My boss and I were talking about foreign travel (she spent a year abroad) and said that for her, just saying to herself "hey! I'm in a totally different country" explained a lot...both as comfort, and as excitement. Guess what "hen". You're in a totally different country! :-) Hugs from here.

That's awesome, Leila. I think I had my 'not in America anymore' moment when I saw a castle-esque building that had been converted to a shopping mall. Never'd happen in the U.S. NEVER.
