FRINGE. I watched all of it over my abysmally short winter break because the way you described it back in December made it sound incredible, and oh, it was-I'm so glad I gave it a second chance, the pilot does NOT do it justice. I agree with your (second) c and e wholeheartedly, and I like your interpretation of Peter there. I'm not sure how I feel about the developments since the break, particularly since i) suddenly it's all about Peter's manpain, and ii) Peter having to choose between the Olivias? Olivia, either version, putting up with any of this shit, really? I don't even know. I think they've been doing a good job of-resituating Olivia back in her own universe, and seeing her learning to adjust, figuring things out, etc. They do such a good job with her usually. I'm just not sure where they're going with the overly epic build-up and the manpain-powered device.
Meanwhile, I'm going to download all these albums and load them onto my phone. Something to keep me entertained while mindlessly shelving!
I AM SO GLAD YOU WATCHED FRINGE. Seriously, the knowledge that it's all my fault makes me ridiculously happy. All of the Fringe fans I know have made a particular effort to convert other people since the show was moved to the Friday night death slot, so, go forth and convert!
Olivia, either version, putting up with any of this shit, really? Yes, absolutely. That's a great way of putting it, and I really want to know how she's going to respond to this development. I think that Peter's manpain is a lot less compelling than Olivia's, because honestly the writers have never made much of an effort to connect the viewers to him -- we still don't have any idea of what's going on inside his head, most of the time. such_heights linked me to a great post about how this development might not go totally off the rails, and I am stubbornly putting my hope in that.
the manpain-powered device From now on, this is what I'm going to call it. :D
I'll avoid saying anything because I don't know if you saw Friday's ep, but, oh, Fringe.
BUT, the real reason I came to reply here: the albums. I've been looking for good rap, too, trying to branch out beyond uh, Kanye and Lupe Fiasco, which is the extent of my familiarity with rap. I really enjoyed the P.O.S. album, I'm going to have to give it another listen to figure out my favourites. BUT DESSA-I had no idea I was even looking for something like that until I heard it. Put my headphones on in the cafeteria while eating dinner last Tuesday night, and it was so damn catchy I couldn't help uh, grooving along awkwardly in my seat. You described it so well: the intersection of hip-hop, smoky jazz, spoken-word poetry, and feminism. I can't stop listening to this. I have fallen madly, madly in love with this album. I've already passed it on to someone else who loves it almost as much as I do. So, again: thank you. I owe so much of my music (and reading, and television) to you these days.
I am sort of okay! I am busier & more stressed right now than I have been in a long while, thanks to my extensions (on term work from last term) finally coming due, but ... I will survive!
As you have probably noticed, I realised you'd been posting at your DW account and terrifyingly jumped on top of it, so you'll have received a bunch of notifications. I usually try to be less creepy than that, I promise. :D I would love to hear more about what you've been up to/thinking, though!
I AM SO GLAD THAT YOU'RE ENJOYING DESSA. ♥ She's honestly like nothing I've ever heard before, and I want to share her with everyone -- I love that you love her! I have to admit, I'm trying to fumble my way around the rap/hip-hop genres too, with varying levels of success. That P.O.S. album is my gold standard right now, but I can't seem to find anything like it. I've been enjoying Kanye's stuff, but more in an abstract, "this is a portrait of a life I cannot relate to" kind of way, and I'll have to give Lupe Fiasco a try: any suggestions about which album
( ... )
oh, I think I'm going to snag some of these - maybe Jenn Grant? I've never heard of her but your description is compelling!
re: looking for rap: have you heard the Astronautalis album Pomegranate? I can't speak to his other stuff but I am realllly digging that album. It's more hiphop than rap and I'm not a huge fan of either genre so I can't rate it on that scale, but it is terrific stuff.
Yeah! Jenn Grant is pretty indie I think, she's from Canada -- not exactly high-profile. But she makes great folk/pop/rock. I've been listening to that album every day for weeks.
I have not, but Austronautalis is on the last track of that P.O.S. album (the hidden track), so I will go check him out right now! I'm excited. :) Like you, I'm not really into either genre, but I'm trying to branch out lately.
