I made some very poor plays in this game. It is a good indicator that I should step back and be more thoughtful about board control. In many games I don't control the board enough, but in this game I am decidedly too controlling. The problem is, I can't really control this board, and I should wait a bit until I get better racks, meanwhile scoring ( Read more... )

Sure, I think so too. There were probably some other minor mistakes, but this is at least worth noting.

If this is one of your worst games, you're in a pretty good position.

Sometimes, we need games like this. It was a good reminder for me too. I'm guilty of making plays like jun because quite frankly, I don't know what else to do in those situations.

I think it is great to have a reminder like this. This game is extremely helpful!

after my horrible misadventure the first game of the SLO tourney i decided i don't know how to control boards and might as well not try. most of the time, this will work against most players.. not 1900s though.

This won't really work against most players though. Almost anyone is going to play HIP (unless they don't find it), score well, and open the board. Many of Jerry's plays, at least after JUN, don't seem to require much thought. As for the first part, I am happy bumbling on control for awhile, but I feel like I am trying a lot of new stuff and at least getting some good ideas (albeit bad ones as well). The nice thing is that I can look through my bad ones, and understand them better. Now now for giving up on controlling boards!

You always want to control the board. The difference is that sometimes you want to keep it open and sometimes you want to keep it closed. The trick is knowing which to do, and then imposing your own will on the board (instead of letting your opponent make the choice.)

Well, sure. What I'm trying to say is that I'm trying to be too defensive, and I'm not really being defensive anyway.
