Luck In Scrabble

People complain so much about Scrabble. Players complain about their own bad luck "my opponent got 8 power tiles." They complain about their opponent's bad luck "sorry I got 8 power tiles that game." They complain about deficiencies in word knowledge and strategy, and about their opponent's deficiencies in word knowledge and strategy. Complaining ( Read more... )

I agree with your main point. But, mostly, I agree about Gilbert and Sullivan! What were you listening to when you wrote that?

Actually, I wasn't listening to any music. I thought of Gilbert and Sullivan (or should I say Gilbert and SULLIVAN) though, and it seemed like a fun thing to say. It's a rant so I can do whatever I want right?

I apologize when I get good luck because it heads off people complaining about their tiles. I can't stand when people complain (I still do sometimes, too), so I try to just get it on the table before they have a chance. That's my excuse. But some people...holy crap get over yourself.

and when i say "cant stand it" I mean that I actually feel uncomfortable. You'd think I could just ignore it, but somehow I've adopted this mechanism instead. sigh.

This. I prefer to get bagged than to bag, because I feel sorry for my opponent. I end up apologizing mostly as a gesture of empathy, in the sense of "I'm sorry you had a bad day."

Up to a point, anyway. I wouldn't mind being on either side of a Sherman-Whitmarsh or a Lerman-Matsumoto kind of game just for the experience.

wrong bradley?

Usually when a ridiculous bagging occurs against me, I try to just laugh it off. Literally, I laugh sometimes. Not out of annoyance, but just like oops looks like im not winning this game.

Well, the point of this is to try not to worry about it. But clearly it's easier said than it done.

OTOH, life is like Scrabble in that there's no sure thing -- all you can do is make the play that gives you the best chance of catching a lucky break.
