With the rash of silicone implant surgeries that were going on for a while there, does this potentially mean that platinum will no longer be considered a rare metal? Ideally, I think that implant material should be natural, i.e. if liposuction is also performed, that the fat cells would be used in enhancing the bust; but nooo, we have to do things the risky way because bigger is better in America and who cares how we accomplish that?

Platinum is an element, and not a normal constituent of silicone. However, it is also a catalyst (hence its biological effects), and if the process that creates silicone employs platinum, there could be residues.
In any case, I agree wholeheartedly with your position on (most) elective cosmetic surgery. I'm too timid to get lasic, myself.

I'd be curious to know if plastic surgery in other industrialed nations is on par with those standards.
