I can hear a significant portion of the annual downtown blues festival from my house (which is not really that close to downtown). Some years I've cursed the beat waking me up in the night, but this evening I opened the windows and let the music in. -
Summer
Just now while driving my tired dog home from her friend's house, I stopped at Locopops and got a root beer float popsicle and a watermelon lime popsicle, and while I was eating them in the car one of my favorite, rarely heard songs came on the radio, and--I love my life. -
74 degrees and sunny
I had a lovely time today biking around downtown, from the Farmer's Market to Locopops (pomegranate orange popsicle, mm) to the Bike Co-op, with about twenty people from Traction. I met a bunch of people, nearly all of whom have lefty helping jobs--providing affordable housing, preventing the spread of HIV, studying public policy, doing massage ( ( Read more... ) -

C, age 12, tonight asked me a question about American agricultural production that made me wish I had actually finished The Omniscient Omnivore. My life is good.
It looks a great deal like I will be able to latch onto a funded, IRB approved, and (to me) very interesting study for my dissertation. (It's a brain imaging study of memory in kids with kidney disease.)

Comps are done. For now, anyway. Today was easier than yesterday, except for the last question, where none of us had any idea what we were doing. I do not think I failed horribly, although I might have to rewrite one or two things. I am really glad it's over with. -

Comps SUCK.
There is no way I am going to come out of this thinking, "Yeah, I rocked that." I will clearly come out thinking, at best, "Hope I pass." Debriefing with classmates indicates it's not just me. Must do another six hours of cold writing on campus tomorrow, then it'll be over. Till the rewrites. -
Comps
My doctoral comprehensive exams are Wednesday and Thursday. I thought I was fairly calm about them, but last night I woke up sweating at 3:30 am from a nightmare in which I somehow had agreed to perform a solo concert for a large unknown crowd. I can't sing.
All the dreams I ever remember are exactly this transparent. -

For the first time since Saturday morning, both the toilet and the shower in my only bathroom have been declared usable. The toilet was on the front porch from Saturday morning until last night, when the tilers said I could use it if I stepped gingerly in the middle of the tiles.
