PERSONALITY:
❝ If someone says it's wrong to hope, I will tell them that they're wrong every time. ❞
Madoka seems to be the perfect example of the very definition of compassion: she's overly kind, friendly to everyone and amazingly selfless. She is honestly just a good person that tries to get along with everyone and is not the sort to pass judgment based on appearances or words alone. Shown once in a early timeline when she managed to keep the group from turning on one another when Homura admits that Kyubey is tricking them and again when even with both Sayaka and Mami in the current timeline, two people she had complete trust in continue not trusting Homura. This does not change Madoka's mind from trying to reach out to the other girl. As time passes on, it's Homura that becomes someone Madoka seeks out for advice and solace: speaking with her on multiple occasions when she feels lost or confused about what is happening to and around them. In a sense, she tries to play peace keeper amongst the girls and wishes for them to work together as they have one common enemy that is no each other.
Sometimes shy, but loyal to a fault she is forever putting the needs of other people before her own. She will do whatever she can to help a friend out or try and act as some sort of support for them. She feels she need to do something out of fear for being thought of as a coward or a weakling that is forever protected by other people. This is best shown when Sayaka became a Puella Magi, Madoka would follow her ever chance she got just in case there was ever the chance the girl needed help because if that was the case, she could make a contract and become a Puella Magi in order to save the girl-both so she could help Sayaka and in a way, make up for not being able to do the same for Mami.
Being a teenage, she can be both naive and gullible. This tends to get her into trouble as she easily believes Kyubey in multiple timelines: not asking questions, explanations or thinking hard on what it would mean to become a Puella Magi which leads her to making rash choices and wishes. Madoka does not have much self-confidence in herself or her abilities without her magical powers and believes she has no good qualities to be proud of. This changes when she sees Mami fight for the sake of others and when she realizes she could possibly do the same thing, it fills her with a happiness she had not felt before. Madoka believes just being able to be Puella Magi alone will be granting her wish, since someone like her-someone so useless-could finally be useful to someone else.
Madoka is also sadly very self-hating at times, blaming herself for things far beyond her control and becoming visibly upset; following Mami’s death she believes that it what happened was her fault because she was both weak and a liar who abandoned her friend when she was needed most after earlier telling Mami that she would be there for her. When she is later captured by a witch and tortured with images of Mami and her death, she believes this is something she deserves for those very reasons. She justifies her negativity by saying she is weak, and this was the very reason things went wrong to being with.
Hidden inside though is strength in her that Madoka does not believe she is capable of. In previous timelines when she is a Puella Magi, this has been shown when she faced witches with both bravery and amazing confidence. With this confidence of her own, she also tries to reassure and give confidence to others such as when Homura and she met in the very first timeline. When Homura is unable to solve a math problem, Madoka is there to cheer her up by telling her that she should worry too much because there’s people like her that come to school every day and still don’t understand it and again later when she uses her magic to help Homura feel better and be capable of doing the high jump, so the girl might gain some confidence too... even though that immediately went wrong when her magic caused Homura to start running and be unable to stop.
Madoka is also able to realize her mistakes and realize how rash she was for her wish in this timeline and can tell Homura that she should not become a Puella Magi on a whim like her but instead wishes for the girl to crave her own path if she really did want to become a Puella Magi. She knows the dangers of what being a Puella Magi even asking Homura to take care of a cat they both came to befriend named Amy and also warning her not to go out on very stormy nights, nights that would be fitting for an appearance of Walpurgis.
Along with being able to admit that it’s not safe battling witches she can say with pride that she gets scared, makes mistakes and feels like she causes Mami a lot of trouble but by defeating them she can save a lot of people and that alone is worth the danger she faces. Even faced with what she knows will be her death in the first timeline against Walpurgis, she tells Homura she will not run away from the fight even after Mami has died. She is still a Puella Magi; it is her job to protect everyone despite now being the only one left to do so. Madoka is able to tell her that just being able to save Homura from a witch and become her friend makes her glad she became a Puella Magi and that she has no regrets despite all the bad, which allows her to go into battle with a smile on her face.
In a later timeline, her sheer determination and need to protect is shown when she is forced to kill Mami to keep her from killing Homura after already having killed Kyouko when they learned the truth about their Soul Gems and what would become because of them. Later, she uses her last Grief Seed to clean Homura Soul Gem and ask the girl to travel back in time and save her from being tricked again. She goes on to ask the girl to mercy kill her and stop her transformation into a witch, telling her that even though so many horrible and sad things had occurred... there was still so much in it she wanted to protect.
This also shows in what she what she wishes for: her early wishes were sometimes rash and reckless, but it shows just how selfless she truly is-in all the different timelines that her wishes are known they have always stemmed from Madoka's immense kindness and want to help someone else besides herself. She makes a contract to save a cat that had been hit by a car, to save Homura and the city from Walpurgis and finally to save all girls across every dimension and throughout all of time from their fate of becoming Witches.
Although Madoka is not the sort to become angry, she does become upset and determined when she finds out the truth of the Incubators and what happens to girls who become Puella Magi. Even though Kyubey explains it is to save not only the planet but the universe, Madoka lashes out telling him he's done nothing but trick them and she cannot accept what he says, able to fully realize just that he truly is their enemy. She believes that no matter the wish, every single girl believed in that wish and they were all precious because of that. And for them to have to have their wishes corrupted and their wishes instead used to curse? It is both heartbreaking and unfair to her as Madoka believes they should live their lives with that regret and despair being forced to take root and corrupt both them and the very thing they believed in so much.
Learning all of this though allows her to begin building up a sense of determination to not just change those rules but destroy them and change the need the girls to bear so much and be forced to become something that hurt and cursed others. She wanted them to live on with smiles on their faces and with hope in their hearts. She did not want to let all of them cry, all of the Puella Magi who believed in that hope and fought for it against witches. With this in mind, she is finally able to find a wish, a prayer she is willing to give her life for.
To erase every witch before they are born. Every witch from every world, from the past and the future. With her own hands.
ABILITIES:
❝ I'm still a Puella Magi. I have to protect everyone. ❞
Madoka is a Puella Magi, or more simply put: a magical girl.
Incubators are being that change the girls who are willing to work in exchange for their wish being granted into Puella Magi. This work is job of fighting Witches and with their transformation into Puella Magi, each girl gains varying and wide varieties of magical power. When the contract is formed a special gem, called a Soul Gem, is created which is the source of the girls' magical powers. As the girl uses her powers, the Soul Gem begins tarnish and its light begins to fade as does her powers. The only way to reverse this effect and replenish their magic is by defeating Witches and collecting the Grief Seeds they drop, with this item they are able to cleanse their Soul Gem. Powers, outfit and weaponry a girl receives upon making a making a contact depends not only on the nature of the wish and the girl, herself. A girls' potential and thus future magical strength depends on the misfortune she is destined to carry. So the Queen of a country or a savior would be much stronger than an girl living an ordinary life.
Unfortunately, all of this does not come without another price. In fact the Soul Gems are aptly named as it is the girls' soul in a compact and physical form, ripped from her body when the contract was made. It must remain within a hundred meters of the girl's body for her to control her body or the body becomes unresponsive and lifeless until the gem is returned. If the Soul Gem happens to be destroyed, the girl will die. Because of this separation of soul from body, Puella Magi are capable of withstanding numerous horrible injuries. They do not feel pain the same way as before and thus are able to fight for as long as they can use magic to continue healing their bodies. As Soul Gems also represents her hopes and dreams, she is forced to experience despair equal to the amount of hope she created with her wish which will further tarnish the gem. If a girl overexerts her abilities, fails to cleanse her Soul Germ or loses her hope and falls into despair, the Soul Gem with tarnish beyond repair and become a Grief Seed. When this happens, the Puella Magi "matures" into a Witch.
Now when it comes to Madoka, she is an exception. Unlike other ordinary girls, she has exceptionally powerful latent abilities thanks to Homura continuing to rewind time over and over again. Kyubey at one point tells her that she has the power to change the universe if she so wishes too. Which... she goes on to do in episode twelve! By wishing to erase all witches in every dimension, every timeline with her own hands, she completely rewrites not only the laws of the universe but the universe itself. With her wish, she is able to be everywhere at once - appearing before girls the moment before they would become a Witch and taking all of their grief and despair, allowing them to pass on in peace knowing that their wishes would not be in vain and they would not have to become something that hated and cursed anyone.
Of course, all of that time-traveling 'be everywhere at once' won't exist in-game as she at her canonpoint she hasn't created the paradox needed to destroy her own Witch form and escape the bounds of reality to become the embodiment of hope itself. She is still extremely powerful in her own right, but as her powers even as a normal magical girl really are at a god-tier level this will be capped to something more manageable in-game and no where her normal level. What she will keep are her abilities to do basic things with her magic: running faster, jumping higher, healing, etc. She also has her unique attacks which allow her to fire bright pink magical arrows from her bow, she is capable of charging these for more powerful attacks or firing multiple arrows at once.
Her ultimate attacks involves creating
a symbol in the sky, shooting a charged arrow into the center where it multiples and rains down some pink, sparkly destruction.
