It's a tradition that seems to be familiar in other parts of the world. In Iwatodai, I don't believe that we were encouraged to hang up stockings in the manner here but there were decorations in the same style.

I believe that you place presents in the stockings of those you consider close to you. Traditionally children would put them up and St. Nicholas would give them presents if they behaved during the year.

I believe the idea is that gifts are left in the stocking on the night before the holiday. I am not sure I want any random gifts from this city, but I'm not fond of the idea of angering them, either...

Oh, I see! Thank you for telling me. Last year the city gave us each a gift beneath a large tree; perhaps it intends to bring the gifts into our homes, this time.
