should I buy a new car?

Dec 28, 2007 16:28

...or specifically, an SUV? One that gets better gas mileage than my car, uses regular unleaded vs. premium, yet has way more power? Should I become "one of those people?" DO I DARE?

Opinions welcome.

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!! It's pretty, too!

But I really, really, really miss my car right now. Cue the violins, please.

Oddly enough, I didn't get an email about this reply. I wonder if LJ notifications are working correctly?

I bought the smallest new Jeep despite some misgivings. Partly because right now my driving is almost nil vs. a 54-mile daily commute, and because I have numerous home projects I want to accomplish.

I also still have my Beetle however, and if I had to commute again I'd use that. I think the gas mileage difference is not very much... the Jeep gets 31 MPG in optimal highway conditions, averaging 22.5 MPG overall.

I decided to buy it... mainly for the cargo capacity. I have loads of things to purge but I needed something larger than a trunk to do it with.

Well since I don't know what you drive now...I can't compare but obviously anytime you can get better gas mileage - isn't it better? :) My car gets about 20MPG and my truck only 11MPG - IT SUCKS! Happy Hunting!

why hello there! Welcome to my wild, wacky, and sometimes wonderful world!

I see you are in Phoenix. Oddly enough, I'm considering a move there this spring. We should chat!

most cars dont actually require the premium gas (even if they say they do) according to the gurus on NPR's Car Talk.

It's true... they do run on regular unleaded. However, they tend to get worse mileage and they are quite sluggish if they are run with regular but tuned for premium. So there's no advantage to running the cheaper gas.
