I've seen this essay written a million times in a million different places, and only rarely has it been grounded in reality. This is not one of those instances. Rhetoric, from both the right and the left, has blown our current situation vastly out of proportion. There is no mysterious, cataclysmic danger, be it from terrorism or be it from the Bush administration's handling of such. The PATRIOT act, while unneccessary and potentially abusive, has proven to be nothing more than the emergency precaution it was billed as. Halliburton's portion of the reconstruction contracts is a reasonably logical move; after all, like it or not, Iraq is oil-rich, and frankly, oil companies are the most experienced at managing oil. And perhaps it's because I attend liberal schools in a liberal town, but I have never witnessed someone being called unpatriotic

Well written Max. The other day I was on the bus talking about Chomsky with the bus driver. This one asshole muttered "fuckin commie" to me and the driver slammed on the brakes and stared him down . He got off at the next stop. What irritates me the most is when I am having conversation with a person, and someone will butt in just to say "OH GOD, are you talking politics?! That has no place in " I feel they deserve whatever fate someone else decides for them. I might as well pick it for them, what's the damned difference?
