I think science needs the same thing that atheists need: a likable PR person who knows his or her shit... rather, a team of them.
We need a bunch of people like Duke Leto Atreides, who make the otherwise science unfriendly think, "Despite my better judgment... I like this scientist (or atheist as the case may be)."
Having a louder voice is important. Having a compelling voice is, too. Preaching to the choir helps motivate, but knowing how to preach to the undecided and contrary produces converts.
What's more important is that people are free to believe whatever bullshit dogma they believe in.
One man's carbon dating is another's Bible.
Everyone has their own team in their own corner. They're gonna believe what they're gonna believe. What's more important is their freedom to believe what they believe...
...even if a mass of data disprove what they believe.
The sky is made of pizza. I challenge anyone to debate me otherwise. I look to the firmament and see pepperoni and anchovies, cloaked in delicious mozzarella.

Science or religion? Who cares?

It is legally permissible in this country, as it should be. People are free to think whatever they want.
It should not be encouraged, though, as it detrimental to the progress of rational thought and toxic when used in the development of public policy.
