I still recommend Tamora Pierce. Her Emelan books [The Circle of Magic series and The Circle Opens series] don't have talking animals, and neither does her Protector of the Small series. [The others do, but not these.]

IDK if Susan Cooper's series The Dark is Rising is really cheery, but you should read it later when you're in the mood for a little awesome good vs. evil action. :D It's very epic and has a really great mythic feel to it.

Um... that's about it rn. SORRY!

Big List of Good Light Books - note that most of these are mysteries

The Mediator Series by Meg Cabot
She wrote most of this before the Princess Diaries. It features a girl named Suze and the hot ghost who lives in her room.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
It is a doorstop, but a super easy read.

Sunshine by Robin McKinley
The least intellectual of her books.

Because vampires.

The Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris
Murder, yes? But mostly cotton candy and the worst dressed narrator ever.

Tithe by Holly Black
For a change of pace: fairies!

Bridget Jones' Diary by Helen Fielding
Just as fun as the movie.

Ella Minnow Pea by Some Dude Whose Name I Forgot
I don't remember much aside from that it was cute and there was a lot of spelling.

Rainey by Clyde Edgerton
Experience the culture of my people with the definitive book about the common Southern wedding.

Austenland by Shannon Hale ( ... )

Discworld by Terry Pratchett... it's satire and it cracks me up.

uh.... crap I am just now realizing I don't read a lot of cheery books myself hahah..

Percy Jackson is a series that also cracked me up at times and was lots of fun to read...if YA stuff like that is your thing...

I'll think of more and get back to you tomorrow..

I really like amateur sleuth books for a bit of light entertainment, they generally aren't that serious, and set in cute little towns. My favourites are by Jenn McKinlay, she has another penname that I can't think of. I like the cupcake bakery ones, and one in a decoupage store. There is another with one book that's set in a library.

I also enjoy a series by Riley Adams, it's a grandma who runs a barbecue restaurant in Memphis, who also solves crime when her friends/family are suspects.

I like these kinds of books for fun reading, the leads are generally likable, and surrounded by kooky folk. There's no real sense of danger either. Just fun!
