I think you should give it a whirl. There's no other better time than now...you're young and motivated. If you do it, and decide you don't want to make a career out of it, you still have science to fall back on, BUT you know all the things about food and flavor that you wanted to.

And, there are people that specialize in the chemistry of food. So that's kind of cool.

Eventually down the line, maybe you do both things...but it wouldn't hurt to try something new.

Now is the time in our life to be adventurous and try all new kinds of things...find what really drives us and makes us happy.

There are probably a lot of things that fit both the science in you and the foodie in your, like nutrition. There are about a million things you can do as a registered dietician, and the knowledge itself is a hybrid of science and food.
