i saw this screening at school last night and i feel a bit conflicted about it. i also read the book a few years ago, and for the most part the film seemed faithful to the book minus the ending. the entire visual aspect of the film is really beautiful. i loved the costumes and the dancing, and it was crazy to see zhang yi or whatever her name is

haha. maybe it would've been better and more comical if bai ling was in it. i was cracking up over that weird show on vh1 or something, where a bunch of actors who can't compete sing. bai ling wears outrageous costumes and sings just as outrageously.

yo! haven't seen it but did read the book and i echo your sentiments all the way. it's just nice to know that most critics didn't have much good to say about it so i won't feel guilted into seeing something that doesn't sit right with me. *shrug* i don't even think i can make excuses for this guy because it's NOT social commentary, just exoticization. i think even TV is doing a better job at representing asians than most movies out there. but just barely. try checking out "saving face". it's a more indep movie and i don't agree with all of its elements but it's still a really well-done asian american movie. (blows better luck tomorrow out of the water). ttyl yo! thanks for being honest with us and yourself.
