For the first time in my short sport entertainment career (3 years), I finally got to work a big game. Last night Pettitte rehabbed with the Trenton Thunder. Preeeeetttty amazing stuff. Very chaotic and the most intense night of my life, but so much fun. It really added to what has been an amazing start to a great start to the Eastern League ( Read more... )

I think you're right. I'm sure there are a number of players in the minors right now who are major league material, but aren't there for any number of reasons. There certainly are plenty in the minor leagues who've played at least a few games in the majors.

And one player does not make a team. I guess that argument doesn't hold as much water when the player in question is a pitcher, but it's still true. You can win a lot of games on the shoulders of one good player, but you really need a good team to win playoffs. I mean... look at the Cavaliers when they had LeBron. And how many championships did they win? Right.

I think that they should because on the flip side, is it fair that a player won't be able to rehab BECAUSE it's the playoffs? Like you said, the minors are basically for player development. Not that they aren't important, but it's basically where you fine tune your chops before movin' on up, if you're so lucky.

So I say yes.

Well, okay. The whole point of the minor league system, essentially, is to build players who will be able to cut it in the majors. If minor league players cannot hold their own against a major league pitcher who is coming back from an injury and therefore probably not playing at 100%, then I think the team has bigger problems than facing the major league pitcher in the first place.

In any case, I was only vaguely aware that the minor leagues even had playoffs, so... no, I don't think it matters.

I was thinking about this when they were talking about Andy's start and I posed the question to myself. The only sticking point I had was:

Imagine you are a hitter in AA. You are standing at the plate. And Andy flippin' Pettitte is standing on the mound. Sure you're being prepared for the majors someday, but you're in AA right now. And that's ANDY flippin' PETTITTE! You are nervous. You are ten times more nervous than if it was any other AA pitcher right up to if it were (college phenom) Matt Purke starting his career. No one has ever put "future Hall of Famer" in front of any AA pitcher's name while he was in AA. Now, you need to hit. Off Andy flippin' Pettitte. But keep calm and wait for your pitch.

Is that fair? I don't think so.
