Good omens, or maybe I just don't think about anything else.

Last night I submitted my application for NYU. Then I went to sleep and dreamt that I had been admitted and was just starting in the department. I was completely elated, except in my dream Duke and Chicago had also accepted me and I didn't look at the schools at all, so I was having some anxiety about that. But I was mostly just excited to be ( Read more... )

I must be pretty cynical about all this. Even with all of the encouraging events along the way, I have never had a dream where I got into Columbia. Who knows, maybe my brain doesn't have anything like it to draw on. I bet if I did have a dream that I was going to Columbia or Harvard, it would be one of those ones where I suddenly remember that I haven't gone to any classes for months, and I have 15 units of courses that I can't drop.

Glad to see it's going well for you too.

I have been told by people who know, that unless you are an ultra-competetive back-stabbing bastard, U Chicago is probably not the best place for grad school.

Still, the food is good and you can't beat the blues.

Oooo!!! You could also bask in the residual glory and influence of Clifford Geertz and Marshall Sahlins (Bernie's brother).

And Rockefeller chapel is awfully pretty.

I've heard that too, about Chicago. It's not my first choice, I just think I'd love living in Chicago. Is that a bad reason to want to go to grad school somewhere? There are some great faculty too, of course, but really...I was looking at craigslist.chicago and you can get a big one bedroom in Hyde Park for like 600 bucks a month!

Hyde Park is getting a little less scary. (I think the Obamas have a house there.) Just be careful about where in Hyde Park you live. Some of those areas are a little dangerous.

But, you're right, Chicago is awesome. There's LOTS of places to live in the city.
