New artwork...and finally a reappearance?

Sep 25, 2009 07:35

I'm notorious for vanishing for long peroids of time and then not coming back. I don't know how regularly I'll be reading livejournal, but I'm really intent now on improving my artwork--and I'm going to leave behind as much of my old anime influence as possible--meaning that I'm heading more and more in the "realistic" direction (without being 100 ( Read more... )

It's so good to hear from you!
How have you been? :D

I really like what you've posted on dA. Especially the colored version of Altaria :)

I hope you and arckyosuke are well.
I was so happy when I learned about your engagement! :)
I hope you'll keep us updated on the plans ^^

I wrote you an email this summer, but I'm not sure you got it.
I came back to Davis for a week in July, and I thought of you two a lot ^^ Thank you so much again for all you did for me back then! :)

Lots of love,

Jaina -

Hi Jaina!

Thank you for your kind comments. arckyosuke and I are doing well. He's busy working on his Master's thesis, and since he's nearing the end of his project, he's been busier than usual, trying to get the data collecting done as quickly as possible. Currently, we haven't been able to work much on wedding plans, but we'd like it to be sometime in spring--preferably in April.

I might not have gotten your e-mail. I changed e-mail addresses earlier this year, so it might have gotten lost. My new e-mail is wetheril(AT)gmail(DOT)com. (spelled that way so that bots won't be picking it up, hopefully. You're welcome Jaina, and it was a pleasure to hang out with you in Davis. Those were some fun days.

How have you been lately? I last recalled you had a job involving helping students out at an English program, and later you were helping out a website? (My memory is a little fuzzy, so I'm sorry if I got it wrong.)

I enjoy hearing from you again. Take care and KIT. :)

Uh, I guess you do seem to be a bit rusty in your Photoshop coloring/drawing. Hope you keep up the practice.

Yeah. Actually I do notice there are some flaws when I look at it critically. For one, the colored image just doesn't look like the sketch, and the proportions are just a little off. I always seem to have a problem with the alignment of the eyes after fixing the proportions. Admittedly, when I first started coloring that image--I didn't know what I was doing. And I colored things the hard way. Now, after reading some photoshop tutorials, I've learned what I could improve on.

And in the sketch picture, I think the perspective of the wall needs fixing, and the whole piece needs a better composition. The problem is...there isn't enough room in the sketchbook to make much of a composition to begin with. That's the problem with starting a picture on the figure and working outwards...should have planned the placement of the whole picture first before starting to sketch it.

*laughs* What were you thoughts?

I think the sketch is alright. I'm no good with composition myself so there isn't much I can say.

Just the colored face bothers me. I think one part is the eyes alignment/symmetry. The second part is the mouth, there's something that feels very wrong about it. Finally, I feel confused by the coloring. The hair is done very well, don't get me wrong, but I'm unconvinced the shadows are consistent with the light source.

By the way, I have a dA account that I update now and then, but I'm not sure if you'd want to know. I don't put up anything worth noting, just random sketchy stuff drawn in Paintchats.

You're very observant. I changed a lot of elements about the original sketch...and the changes don't quite blend too well. For one, I realized the original tilt of the face didn't quite line up with the placement of the mouth. The mouth may appear strange because it's been "fixed". The lower part of the eyes make them look misaligned because of how they slope upward--it's a change that wasn't there in the original sketch. As for the lighting source--at the time, I drew the hair on a separate layer from the face. I should have dropped a shadow under the hair onto the face, but I didn't. I think I got rather lazy at that point. I'd already fumbled around with brush options for about 5 hours.

Anyway, case in point--don't go coloring in photoshop with no idea what you're doing with your tools. Or if you do--just stick with a thumbnail.

Welcome back! It's been a while! I'm glad to see you're getting back into art. It's important to stay in touch with creativity and expression, which I've had difficulty doing lately.

Definitely keep it up! :)

Ack, I didn't realize it had been so long since you posted this, but I've been meaning to comment on it for such a long time! I'm so happy that you're drawing again!!! And I really miss you, dude! It's not like I'm not guilty of disappearing from the internet for long periods too, but I'm glad you've resurfaced ( ... )
