i think the whole thing is pretty silly any way you look at it. it's stupid for people to get upset that lots of people say "happy holidays" now instead of "merry christmas." but...i'm jewish, and i don't get offended when people wish me a merry christmas. they mean the same thing whether they say it in a holiday-specific way or not: let's acknowledge the idea of the universal good cheer of the season.

if it's someone i'm going to see more than once in my life and they just don't know i'm jewish, generally i'll tell them i don't celebrate christmas, just for future reference. but if it's a well-wishing stranger, hell if i'm going to correct them or do anything but smile and say "thanks, you too!"

The layers of absurd it is for a Jewish lady telling some sales clerk who wishes her "Merry Christmas" on her way out the door is mind-boggling. And of course, on the flip side, for a devout Christian lady to correct "happy holidays."

But yes, to tell a new friend who is like "hey Cory, have a good break--hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas"...that is a completely legitimate situation to mention "well, we'll have (or have already had) a good Hannukah."

And boy, do I hate when people are like "oh...my....God, i am SO SO sorry." Also weird and inappropriate. You have to forgive them for you being Jewish. Anyway, Happy Friday Cory! Hope you are enjoying movies and Chinese food wherever you are.
