That sounds beautiful. Sounds reminiscent of Missouri, when I was a kid. I could go out at dusk and look out over the field of my dad's property and see a thousand little sparkles.
A friend of mine said that once he was outside smoking and he caught on that every time he inhaled, this one lightning bug would light up- that they were signaling to eachother.
Lightning bugs are pretty close to the coolest thing I've ever seen.
I didn't know it was a lightning bug at first -- I thought it was one of those ordinary spade-shaped things. But then it lit up. And I got to thinking how weird it is, these foibles we people have.
Like, cockroaches fill me with loathing and disgust, yet they're essentially the same thing. Spiders and ladybugs and whatnot, all essentially the same (yes, spiders are arachnids, but anyways), but we react so differently to the ones we "like."
And man, the whole concept of bioluminescence just blows my freaking mind. I mean, absolutely the coolest thing ever. And the green color is so peaceful, it just adds to the magic. Similarly, those weird squids and other deep-sea life that light up are just as awesome.
I somehow read that "when I blew cigarette smoke on him, he blew up." I'm a little disappointed that that wasn't the case, but still, it's a great picture.
