Yesterday David and I became homeowners, which seems like a big life step from where I am standing. It was glorious to finally be given keys to our house and be able to unlock the doors ourselves and go inside. It was really like opening up the biggest present ever. (Except that we are paying for it and to get to this point was awfully horrendous

This might not translate to those of you outside of publishing, but we received a very strange package in the slush pile yesterday. To explain, "slush" means unsolicited manuscripts. We get sent 10-20 a day. On Monday Lynne, our submissions editor, got a large box on her desk. It had to be the largest submission box ever! She was convinced that it

It is as dark as night in my flat right now as a storm passes right over the building. I looked up from reading to find it almost pitch black at 1:40 in the afternoon. The humidity was palpable, and as I got up and looked out the window lighting struck close and thunder echoed and cracked. It's amazing. A few more lightning strikes and the rain
