My ConFurence 6 video

Apr 24, 2015 11:32

I don't know why I never converted my old Hi8 camcorder footage of ConFurence 6 (1995) to a digital format before. It was my very first con, after all. I guess maybe one reason I didn't bother is that there isn't much of it - only about 5 minutes' worth. I of course intended to take a lot more videos, but I quickly found other things to do at the ( Read more... )

It feels like a game of fandom bingo! Try to spot everyone from two decades ago. It doesn't help that I'm terrible at names and faces. :-p

I'm terrible at names and faces.

Me, too! Despite that, a lot of people I see in this tape look at least somewhat familiar to me. Keep in mind that there were only about a thousand furs in the whole fandom at that time. It was perhaps inevitable that we'd all cross paths at some point at what was then the only furry convention in the world.

Furlup! *grin*

And who was the guy with the white bunny(?) plush at the beginning? I see a lot of puppets there. And skunk motifs.

Very nice.

That was the furry fan known as 'Teddy Ruxpin' (or 'TR' as most of us called him). The bunny he made and is holding is a plush representation of the alt.sex.plushies newsgroup mascot, 'Plushy'.

The guy you mostly see holding a puppet is Steve Plunkett. His puppet shows were a regular feature at ConFurences, and the earlier Anthrocons.

The thin kid with the Pepe/Fifi outfit was Lynx Meerkat, my roommate at CF. He made the druid otter costume that I commissioned for the con. I think I've posted pics of 'Lontra Blackotter' before...

Lynx is no longer active in the fandom, but I'm not sure about TR or Steve. I haven't seen either of them at the recent FCs I've been to. Then again, two decades can change a person's physical appearance beyond recognition, so I may have seen them but not realized it.

This was filmed back when furry conventions *really* made me uncomfortable. I'm not complaining ;)

I'm pretty sure furlup was made by Shawn but not worn by him.

Yep, it was Furlup Endicott's suit. Furlup was also the Animal Control Officer in this video taken at CF the year before.

*chuckle* I also remember Furlup because of the license plate on his pickup truck. It was HOT4K9S. ^^

I really do enjoy these looks into the early days of furry cons... of course I was too young to be a part of it, so it's just neat seeing how things used to be and how they've grown. Thanks for sharing!
I really love the shape of that red panda's head, I think Porsupah showed it to me in comments on a prior entry.

Glad you enjoyed it! I think it's interesting how little some things have changed. Other things are definitely different now, though - like the number of fursuits! That lobby looks horribly mundane without any costumes anywhere to be seen. I remember at the time being very disappointed at how few fursuits there were at CF6. I doubt there were more than three dozen costumed characters total, and only a handful were what we today would consider to be professional caliber suits.
