Last night I had a dream that I was having an asthma attack. I was tearing around the house trying to find my inhale with absolutely no luck. There were a couple people milling around just kind of getting in the way and staring at me, concerned and useless. It dragged on in painful detail, much like having an asthma attack ( Read more... )

I've had Coit recommended to me for my apartment, because I want the same thing. You *can* rent a machine and do-it-yourself, but it is really hard, backbreaking work, and the kinds of machines you can rent weren't really meant to do a whole house with, in my experience. One or two rooms, sure.

Also, the rental machines come with pretty chemically stuff -- I feel like talking to professionals you can get a much better idea of what they're going to use on your carpets, and have a better shot at having less awful stuff used.

Agreed with above. you can rent the steamers at some grocery stores, I know the Safeway in the Casto has them, but it's much, much easier to pay someone else to do it for you.

I think I'll probably go that route.
This whole thing makes me so damn tired.

i've had those asthma attack dreams....not fun. at. all.

yeah, well our bedroom and spare room both upstairs are wall to wall carpeting. I definitely get sicker in there than anywhere else in the house.

i'm sure you've heard it before, but rip that shit out. it's not helping.
when i was a kid, i was ALWAYS sick and once we got the wall to wall outta the house, my allergies and asthma decreased by about 95%.
i dunno how your housemates feel about it, but it's definitely worth looking into. even area rugs are gonna be less harmful than that dang carpeting.

I JUST cleaned the carpets in our apartment.

Go to Safeway and you can rent the carpet cleaner for 40 bucks for 24 hours. The bottle of carpet cleaning solution didn't seem terribly toxic but if you'd prefer I bet they sell something at Whole Foods.

Everyone's saying using the steaming machine is really cumbersome and grueling. What did you think?

I steam-cleaned my house preparing it for renters with a rental machine, on low pile carpeting. It wasn't bad, but then I was only doing about 200 square feet total. My (very fussy) tenant did not complain about stuff in the carpet afterwards, though she was living with a dog.

All that said, I'd probably go with hiring someone.

You know, it's only for 2 rooms upstairs. (and hopefully the stairs themselves if we can swing it)
I think we're just gonna do it ourselves.

Thanks for the input!

I am sure there are cleaners out in this neck of the woods that has more sensitive products...

I personally would hire a pro as they will move the furniture as well as haul up the machine and they have more powerful machines than the ones at the store. the ones at the store are heavy and don't move easily

It's looking like I'm going to borrow a machine from a friend who also has a hypoallergenic cleaning solution.
This needs to happen.
