50th Anniversary Fanwork-a-thon-a-thon, Round One: Eleven

(Secondary prompt: Sonic Screwdriver)

Very well, then, 50th Anniversary Doctor Who fanworkers, let's do some 50th Anniversary Doctor Who fanworks!

And we kick off the first of our monthly series of fanwork-a-thons counting down to Doctor Who's fiftieth anniversary in November 2013, with the incumbent. The old man in the young man's body with the questionable taste in headgear, the complicated marital situation and companions who just won't quit. Not unless you throw them back to the 1930s, anyway. Yes, him in the bowtie.

Eleven is the subject of January's fanwork-a-thon. All forms of fan endeavour are welcome, be it fanfiction, fanart, vids, icons, podfic, fanmixes, and absolutely any other way you can think of to express your creativity while celebrating your love for this thing that is Who. And it doesn't even have to feature the eyebrowless one himself, it could be related to other characters, monsters, themes or situations that in some way relate to the Eleven era. I suppose that might include Amy and Rory, or indeed Amy/Rory, River, the Weeping Angels, the Silence, cracks in the universe or the TARDIS incarnate (and don't forget the Dream Lord. I can't). I leave that up to you, the creators.

It would be nice if your fanworks somehow tied into the idea of the 50th anniversary itself, but if that seems a tall order it's not essential. I think just by exemplifying the era itself you can give an overview of what Doctor Who is and what it means and how much it has changed over the course of a half-century of evolution.

And as promised, each month we're going to have a secondary prompt for those whose creative juices aren't necessarily set flowing by the era under consideration. And for January 2013, that is going to be...

The Sonic Screwdriver. It originated in 1968, with Two, who used it for all sorts of things including, shockingly, driving screws. Three perhaps relied on it slightly less, although he did once memorably stitch a gang of Sea Devils right up using only the sonic and, er...a minefield. Four, on the other hand, was never without the thing from about the halfway point of his tenure and even Romana started carrying one once his bad influence had rubbed off on her. It's been criticised over the years for being a magic wand that enables the Doctor to get out of trouble without either him or the scriptwriters having to think of a clever solution, which was why it was pointedly absent during much of the 1980s, but since the new series has come back the sonic is a firmly established part of the Doctor's toolkit, attaining iconic status and nearly always included in promotional images, DVD covers etc. And then there are sonic blasters/lipsticks/etcetera, etcetera. Plenty of inspiration for some fanwork, I think.

I hope that thematic choice will get everybody in the mood to create. If you're really inspired, you could even try combining the two!

If you're interested in participating, please say so in the comments to this post. I am also providing a list of dates for January, and to ensure regular distribution during the month (and because some people, believe it or not, prefer to work to a deadline) it would be great if you could name a day too. If you really don't want to, though (and believe me, I know the feeling that comes from signing up to a deadline in advance that you later prove unable to meet), then that's fine. As long as people are participating at all, I'm not going to be too obsessive about schedules and so forth.

That said, a few rules:

I'm fine with people posting their fanworks directly to the community, or linking to their own Livejournal/Dreamwidth account, or indeed any external archive or site you use for hosting your stuff. There are no minimum length requirements, but please put any large images or, in the case of fanfic, anything over 1000 words, under a cut or the other side of a link. There are no rating restrictions, but again please cut and provide warnings for anything over PG-13, or which might be considered triggering. Use your common sense, folks. Character-bashing is in the eye of the beholder, but there are ways of critiquing or lampooning something you don't necessarily like about the show without resorting to straight-up hatchet-work that is going to cause angst on the comm. Common sense, again. And disclaimers may or may not actually work from a legal standpoint, but they help me sleep at night.

And most importantly - have fun! :)
