All week on The connection they are talking about books that changed people's lives. each day they have an author on that talks about a specific book and people can call in and talk about other books or the book of the day. Hey, that's awesome. Regarding women characters, perhaps Murdoch's Honor Kline. I can't think of any (although that doesn't necessarily mean there are none; right now memory fails me or there are not many I have read).

Go Ask Alice...heroine soul searcher.
Speak...heroine. Gritty and real.
Gap Creek...heroine. Kind of a slow moving book, but makes you think.
These may not be fine literature...as in, required reading for any course, but they're thought-provoking nonetheless.
I recommend all three.
