I wish I had magic so I could just snap my fingers and we'd be moved. I hate moving. However, I am excited to be in the new house, so I will get through it. Anybody have great ideas on how to move easier?
Well, I'm on the right track then...although I was thinking about drinking large quantities of alcohol and crying first, moving, then crying some more :D
yes - get a dumpster. Throw almost all your shit away. I'm so not kidding. Otherwise you have to pack it up, move it, and unpack it. So if you don't HAVE TO HAVE IT - throw it away. Then - over the years - you buy nice things that work for your home that may cost a bit more, but will last for a long time.
Go through each room and decide - pack or toss. And then do that. Pack up everything but a few dishes, some clothes, and your bathroom stuff. Live out of a suitcase for the last 2 weeks.
My wife and I did this. It was worthwhile and the local Goodwill store benefited greatly (I do encourage donating whatever you can to charity rather than throwing it into a dumpster). It was nice to eliminate so much stuff that we really did not need. But for us it was also necessary since we were moving across states from a house to an apartment. The process was also slow because it involved looking at each individual item and assessing whether or not we wanted to keep it. Packing took us several months. Making decisions is slower than NOT making decisions. So I would encourage a combination of the two techniques. Get drunk, throw out the obvious stuff, randomly throw stuff into boxes, deal with it at your leisure once the move is done amidst alcohol, crying, and much filling of garbage pails, recycle bins and donation boxes as you look at the stuff and wonder why you bothered moving it.
Ugh- I hate moving, too. The easiest move I had was moving from one state to another. The hardest was moving from one apartment down the hall to another.
Best advice: Throw out as much as you possibly can. Anything you don't need, get rid of. Pack as much as you can into boxes early. Clothes for the summer: Pack immediately. Kitchen stuff you use infrequently: pack immediately. Leave out only the few things you'll need while you actually do the move. Label everything you can (easier if done in small batches).
Good luck! I take it that the house transaction is moving forward satisfactorily? :)
all very good advice, especially "the start early, throw away often" stuff.
One other thing that I found helpful (b/c I'm a dork) was to label and number the boxes and keep a sort of index of what was in what box. Makes it much easier to find your hairbrush when it's in the box with your other toiletries, labeled "bathroom 4" or whatever.
