"It wasn't happiness exactly; rather, it was the memory of happiness, the drawing forward of a time when even he had been allowed a taste of something good and honest and pure."

Brilliant.

I've never really thought about it this way but "the memory of happiness" is what sustains us isn't it?

This story is truly excellent!

As he talked, each breath pushed his cracked ribs against Jesse's encircling arms but the pain wasn't as bad as he'd imagined it would be. He leaned back a little, dog-tired, a lifetime's weariness making itself known. So easy just to relax into it, let it all happen.

A lifetime´s weariness - I don´t know why, but I find this picture so enticing and sexy.
I like about Jesse that he´s shrewd and doesn´t leave himself as wide open for hurt as a "classical" Jack. He´s willing to take a risk with Ellis, but a calculated risk, like a businessman. Is there some happiness ahead? I hope so, life has denied Ellis so much, and I guess Jesse as well, even if it hasn´t left him as destitute as Ennis.

Your writing is superb as ever ... and I´m thrilled you´re giving URF another chance. Anxious to read more,
Clara

Ellis' life has been so sad and not always because of himself. I think that letter was Aileen'idea and Caitlyn wrote it because she only know what her mother told her. Ellis should try again, time changed. Thank you so much for sharing. Martha

For all the wrong Ellis has done you feel such a sympathy for him, want to take away his pain, only a writer with great skills could make it so.

Ellis telling Jesse about Caitlyn was beautifully written and these lines I thought were particularly fine."It wasn't happiness exactly; rather, it was the memory of happiness, the drawing forward of a time when even he had been allowed a taste of something good and honest and pure.".

Thank you
Lorna
