Deeply touching and sad. But it shows that even in the midst of the wreckage, there is some salvation, if we only look for it. Thanks.

You make me want to shout out my satisfaction with the way you've expressed Ennis's response to losing Jack and the path he chose for the rest of his life. I sympathize with those who cannot abide thinking about the ultimate tragedy of their lives and must read and write AU's with happy endings - but that's not Brokeback Mountain to me. Above all, this is a love story with a tragic ending, and to change either aspect is to make it into something different. Not necessarily bad - but not Brokeback Mountain.

Thanks for doing it right - and beautifully.

Sorry, what's an AU? Thank you for your support. I do get a little romantic at times but mostly it's the real story which draws me back.

"AU" means changing an essential aspect of the original story. In many cases, and some excellent fics though not my favorite approach, that means Jack not dying. In others the characters retain the same names but little else: Ennis and Jack on the Titanic, in 1930s Chicago, etc. Very popular and some do get good reviews in the Dave Cullen forum.

The movie gave a wealth of possibilities in just a few moments of the scene at Jack's parents with the mother fixing her eyes on Ennis' face and saying "you come and see us again," and Ennis looking back at her with a nod just outside the door.

This story did an excellent job of showing him being vulnerable to someone in a way he could not have been just a few short years before. And that while a person's body and physical presence might be gone, the impact of the love they had in their lives lasts far longer than anythng else. Really beautiful, and effective.

Thank you for that and thanks for your comments. Much appreciated.
Since I wrote that I've discovered AU for myself. I can't say I'm all that keen but Kumari's The Wolf & The Thunderbird has totally captured my attention.

OH....tears, a smile, more tears...I just love "...cold fingers pinching his heart..." and that whole paragraph where he takes the pick up along the familiar trail...
Perfectly in sync with Ennis' character; and it gives him some measure of forgiveness through Jack's mom: "...I wasn't ashamed of my son."
Beautiful, just beautiful.
