I only just found your fic on the link that you provided.
This is incredible. You have such talent in your words, so descriptive and the dialogue is pure perfection.

This fic made my heart ache unbearably, but in a pure, good way.
Thank you for this beautiful fic.

There are a couple of fanfics written on this very subject. Don't recall their titles now.

BBM fanfiction is in two major parts. Ennis after Jack's death and AU (alternate universe) where Jack doesn't die.
One story I can heartily recommend is:
Somebody New by Jenna Sinclair. It is true to the characters of Jack and Ennis as written by Annie P. and the movie. It is a gripping novel length story that will take some of the edge off the tragedy of AP's story and the movie.

Wow, I just re-read your story here and it still packs such a punch. Really beautiful and powerful writing. Just excellent.

Thank you for that. As it was my first I sometimes wonder if it still holds up. I'm glad you feel it does.

Hello,

I read a good bit of canon/dead!Jack and this one was very moving. I've always thought that Ennis and Mrs. Twist would have an affinity for one another over their shared love and loss of Jack and maybe that would bring some small measure of comfort to them both. I think these parts show that well:

but hearing that beloved name spoken with love by someone else's voice, feeling its shape in his own mouth, lit a tiny spark within.

and

But it was the time in between that he came to hold dear, when as the twilight slowly closed in on them, he and Mrs Twist would sit on the tiny porch in silent communion, dreaming their dreams of Jack, and for a short while the great granite weight of secrecy and isolation and shame would lift from his shoulders and he could breathe freely.

I also loved Mrs. Twist's unabashed declaration:

"I'm not ashamed of my son."

That brought tears to my eyes.

Thanks for writing this and take care!

I like to think that Annie Proulx would have brought them together again if she's written a sequel. Mrs T and Ennis need each other, even if they never meet again. They are the holders of the flame. Thank you very much for responding,

Thank you so much, Andy. I confess I've lightened up a little as the months have gone by but these early efforts were a real therapy for me. I hope the later ones don't disappoint.
