God, but that was hard to read. My heart is still pounding. I was afraid Jack was going to walk away from him because he couldn't bear Ennis' shame anymore. The way you wrote it made me feel like that is what Jack should have done. Then, as always, Jack forgives him, whether or not it is what he deserves. Sorry you were blindsided by a resurgence of grief over Heath. I never understood how I could feel such grief over someone I never really knew, but grieve I did. We can only hope that he has found his peace. Great update! Donna

Hi Donna. Thank you for your comment. I do think Jack is a man of great forgiveness because he understands Ennis better than Ennis realises.

I think Jack is quick to forgive Ennis because he can't stand to see Ennis cry. Hurting emotionally. It just does him in and he caves.

I'm so glad that Ennis came home to Jack. It was really hard to hear Jack take out his frustration on Ennis the way he did, but he had been hurt by Ennis and I guess he didn't know any other way to get it out. But then, when Ennis broke down, it broke my heart. I wanted to go there and hug him and make it all better. I love how this chapter ends. Thank you. I'm looking forward to your next chapter. : )

Oh Debra, I love that comment about wanting to hug him and make it better! That is exactly how I have felt about Jack and Ennis since I first saw the film.

At Last!! Ennis has admitted to himself and to Jack that he's queer, that he loves only Jack, that he wants to be with him, love him, fuck him for all the rest of their lives! Now, their worst problems are going to be Rob, Gerry and his kind, Alma, OMT....shit!!! That's enough! But they LOVE each other! Yeah!!
Can't wait for this story to continue. Thanks. Carole

Carole, I'm hoping that their residual problems are that much easier when faced together.

Jack is such a strong person and his love for Ennis is clearly endless. How else could he forgive that? But Ennis's journey has always been painful and it looks like maybe he finally figured it out. Thanks for another great chapter.

My pleasure. Ennis's path is indeed painful but I guess he doesn't have much choice in the matter except to follow that path. I'm enjoying getting him along it.

Thank you, Kathy! I do feel that Jack has no choice but to be with Ennis so he just keeps on doing what he has to in order to have that.

This struck me: "that Jack has no choice but to be with Ennis." I have been exploring that myself, the inevitability of some relationships, and how sometimes people feel as if they have no choice...or perhaps that they truly don't. At this stage in his life, in this story, I can see how Jack would feel this way. If Ennis were to leave now.... Shudder! I cannot even imagine how Jack would feel. Or go on.
Love,
Jenna

Jenna, I really feel that Annie Proulx wrote the characters to be two halves of a whole, that Jack died because he thought he had lost Ennis, and that Ennis then lives with his memories of Jack to complete him as best he can. I've turned the OS inside out and never found a way out for either of them. In real life, Jack may have had a choice but I think in this story, with its multiple layers of meaning, he is a part of something which is beyond real life.
