The short-short skirts are an artifact of TOS, which excuses them a little, but not a lot. They updated so many other things; why not this?

Like you, I was bothered by how little they gave Uhura to do -- her one moment to shine as a communications officer was mostly offscreen, therefore limiting her onscreen role to "chick that Kirk hits on" and "Spock's girlfriend". I agree about the relationship coming out of nowhere, too. On a second watching, it was pretty clear that Uhura confronting him about not assigning her to the Enterprise was supposed to tell us that they were involved, but it's too subtle, doesn't set it up well enough. On the other hand, I kind of liked the new Kirk/Spock dynamic. Kirk has McCoy to be his staunch ally -- and I thought this was an excellent McCoy -- and it points out how different they both are in this reality. I think I will enjoy seeing them grow into that friendship over future movies (they are already signed for two more).

I forgot you'd posted about Star Trek - at the time you wrote it I hadn't seen it, so I didn't want to spoil anything.

I agree with almost everything you said in your post, except that while McCoy was great, my favorite was Spock. I've always had a thing for stoical characters with wide vocabularies and the fact that it was Zachary Quinto sealed the deal. But yeah, it definitely seems weird that Spock would date a student. Conflict of interest much?

I'm very excited for the next few movies - I very much hope Uhura will have a better part.
