I don't know that we can call ourselves non-animals. I know there is the having-a-soul distinction, and the metacognition theories. But I think it's all theoretical. I trust the practical: Get a pet and live with it all its life, and then tell me it has no soul, none of the significance that people have. We dehumanize those we want to use or destroy so we can excuse our actions. Animal has always been an insult. It should never have been.
thats a good way to put it.gitartreeDecember 9 2008, 14:52:24 UTC
Your first paragraph helps me explain why it makes me upset to see how everything can be explained so easily. So much meaning is left out from one's words. One says "that is a tree, it looks cool, it has weird leaves." but when that is heard, you feel like you are listening to a robot.... dude I don't know maybe when said, that person has enthusiasm. No I guess it is just the way you feel that can be expressed into words so easily that bothers me. Like you write a song and you say how the song has great flows and waves that blends with music. And the person you say that to could just say "ok so your music is just spiritual." I probably wasted your time for having you read this. I don't even know if I know what I’m talking about any more. This feeling is old and I probably can't really feel it any more.
I see what you're sayingwildgentlemanDecember 17 2008, 04:28:21 UTC
When I say the tree looks cool, I'm leaving out what cool means. I'm probably also leaving out any attempt to say what I really mean. But that is something that happens really often. We try to use the least effort to say the most, and usually it doesn't work.
