I just got the call today that I appear to be a bone marrow donor match! I've been on the Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor registry for about 7 years and it looks like I finally match someone! Hmm ... restrictions on being a donor? I think the major ones are if you have ever had bloodborn infectious disease like hepatitis, etc, and your age. I believe that if you have osteoporosis, you aren't eligible (thats what they told my mum) ...
As for the process to get on the list? Hmm, it was about 7 years ago that I did it, but I seem to recall it being very simple ... just filling out some health questionaire forms and giving blood samples ...
