Checking In (backdated to....whenever.)

Mar 13, 2006 13:35

A young girl cautiously crept up the hallways of the dormitory building, almost as if expecting something to jump out at her at any minute. Her blue eyes darted about, taking in every detail as she slowly advanced. Few students were in the hallway, but those who saw her stared at her curiously and whispered amongst themselves. Katelyn wondered what ( Read more... )

Oblivious to any murmurings just outside her doorway, or even what was going on in her own room, Kalinka was actually just above the window, sitting on the branch of a tree. Much like everything of hers, it was her tree, and no one else used it, not that any of the other students would have had much to do with a tree. One tan covered leg outstretched, the other bent upwards at the knee, she'd propped one of her hands there, reading a book full of less than realistic accounts of what the average person would call fantasy. Her hands ventured out of too-long sleeves, further hid by a pair of fingerless gloves. They, like her shirt, sneakers, and even her hair, were colored a deep, forest green ( ... )

With so much going on all at once, Katelyn's brief nap had gradually turned itself into a deep slumber. Though she had spent half a semester at another school prior to this, she was still not fully used to sleeping in warm, soft beds after years of resting in trees or in caves. Leaving the human world of new buildings and strange people and papers and schedules behind, Katelyn pulled the covers over her shoulders and happily dreamed of running wild and free in the forest, not a care in the world ( ... )

Arms lifted off and away from the intruder, Kalinka did nothing in the way of keeping her from escaping. Leaving her hands up, as if to prove she wasn't going to harm her, Kalinka began to feel even more uneasy as she was reminded of a similar situation a long time ago. Though she wanted to scramble for her glasses, she waited until she felt the over defensive blur had calmed down a bit first. Blindly dragging spectacles from the window, snapping them open, and slipping them onto her face again, she got a somewhat better look at the shadow on her bed. Well, I guess, the window..?Crossing her legs, Kalinka reached a very flat hand slowly out, down low across the bed, as she would if she were warming up to someone's cautious pet dog. If any so called normal person had snuck into her room, or even knocked and been unwanted, much less used her bed, she would have been angry, but there was something different with this one. Katelyn seemed to have the air of an animal, whose company Kalinka generally preferred over most humans. "I'm ( ... )

As she considered their meaning, she repeated Kalinka's words. "You don't have a roommate. You are alone," the soft-spoken voice coming from underneath the blanket, eyes peering out from the shadows. "I am sorry then...I-I thought this was to be my room." She leaned backwards on the balls of her feet, her body pulling completely underneath the covers as she stretched out in a very feline manner. Slowly the tangled mass began to lower, and then with a rustle fell to the bed empty and lifeless ( ... )

In the darkness, Kalinka stretched out her back and patted at the covers, just to make sure the other girl wasn't somehow hidden underneath them still. "Doing such a thing so casually..." After convincing herself that what she thought happened had actually happened, she leaned over the edge of her bed, marveling at the uninvited guest's new form through a forest of fallen hair. Well, I suppose, the window was open...The new information made things a little more obvious, though Kalinka was still somewhat in denial. "I doubt that, because I've never met another Ka-lin-ka before." She said her own name very deliberately, in the voice that held a subtle yet present British accent. "You are in room one-hundred and four, though. Fortunately or unfortunately." Folding her hands and staying on her stomach, it wasn't her most desired position, but it let her keep an eye on things. Her mind had decided to skip the conversation directly over the unpleasant idea of another girl being her roommate all of a sudden. "I've read about your kind, but ( ... )

"Do not believe all that you read, for my kind keeps many secrets," the girl cautiously warned in her soft, pleasant voice. "I am the one called Katelyn. Katelyn...Doe, I think? I do not know." She became lost in thought, as her mind curiously tried to add up all the pieces of the puzzle. "The whiteskins that saved me and removed many bullet holes, they said my name was Doe because I did not have a name." A quizzical look appeared on her feline features, as both halves of that statement could not be true. "But why did they tell me that I did not have a name after telling me what it was? These papers lie, and also list a name that is not my own." She stared blankly down at her own name written on the acceptance letter before pushing it casually aside.

"Please allow me to rest here for the night, Kalinka the green." She curled up into a warm ball of fur, her feline form more easily resting atop the uneven surface than anything larger. "I will search for a new home after the sun rises."

Kalinka listened on with full attention, imagining all the things that could have happened to the former person underneath her bed. "I suppose, there's no sense in making you leave this late, if you don't have anywhere else to go." Not all that comfortable for long, she turned herself back around again, hands behind her head. Her greens eyes watched the ceiling full of plastic stars that glowed in the dark, which even she might admit were a little tacky, though she had decided to leave them despite the fact ( ... )

"No, I do remember. I remember well." Not easily embarrassed, the talkative girl in the cat's body answered after a pause. "I do not have many scars, though my way of life has been very rough. One good from being able to change your body is that you can repair wounds. But you have to be awake to embrace the wild forms, and you are still sick against disease and pain from within ( ... )
