I never knew the game until I moved to this country. It's truly addictive - no matter what level you're watching. My son has been playing since he was five (he's ten now). It's not an easy game to learn - lots of skill and stamina are necessary - but it's great to watch.
My friend was thinking about emigrating to canada, for several reasons really, but mainly the hockey. I'm beginning to wonder if I should maybe do the same.
Try http://www.hockeywebcasts.com for some streaming feeds. They aren't the greatest quality, but it's how Paul and I watch our team since we don't have cable (when we don't go out to a bar to watch, anyway). I'll agree with you on the home team being crappy. Ever since we lost Smitty the Oilers have been garbage. We we've had some good games this year, but some really really bad ones too (lost 8-3 last night, and 10-2 a week ago... how pathetic!)!
I do love the new rules, though. Hockey is way more exciting since the strike.
That site os fantastic. I bookmarked it straight away. I think I'm gonna have to choose a NHL team to support though, as British Ice Hockey is so under the radar. I'm not sure what rules we're playing by over here (in fact some teams don't seem to be playing by any rules at all *cough*MK*cough*) but it's certainly exciting.
My team is the Oilers. Paul is a fan of them (hometown team, after all) and the Senators. While the American teams often do better, I just have a hard time with the idea of cheering for a team from Anaheim or Florida... I mean, they call it "freezing" when it's still in the double digits (Celsius)! Though the combination of the Pronger and the Niedermayer brothers is pretty kick ass. And I do miss Laroque.
