the big mainstream bands to represent portland for me: everclear, cherry poppin' daddies, the dandy warhols . . . obviously portland almost owns a certain genre and era of indies, but for some reason there was always something a little more thrilling about hearing art alexakis sing about going down to old town to shoot up on top 40 radio than sleater-kinney singing about the light rail, but that's because in my mind everclear is like a national band and they were just local . . tho obvs that was a myopic teenage fantasy.

even meredith brooks's "bitch" was somewhat spectacular for us, cuz she was from oregon city, this yucky town/suburb, and then that song was all over the place!

the most "portland" song for me is cadallaca's "winter storm '98" because my feelings during that storm were represented perfectly in that song.

sigh, i miss being a teenager.

meredith brooks? OMG

i remember moving to san diego and having a bunch of scenekids talking about jewel and how a few years prior how she'd just fuck everybody who worked at my theatre...and then she became JEWEL.

there was a point when "celebrity skin" came out that i'd blast "mailbu" whenever i happened to be around pch/the ocean.

my all-time favorite california music moment came when i was leaving san diego for the last time and i'd put in a mixtape and waits' "diamonds on my windshield" came up, which has a line "..san clemente coming up" which is an area right before you hit orange county...as i was crossing the border from sd county to 'the oc' "san diego serenade" started playing and i just started bawling.

and in spite of my hatred of no doubt and sublime and sugar ray and save ferris and that whole crowd, i still kind of have a weird fondness in their respective modern rock radio success.

aww . . . songs about california seem so much more idyllic! i wish i grew up in california.

i've never heard that song. been to san clemente, tho.

(and i have bought and sold and bought and sold and bought tragic kingdom.)

the singles off of tragic kingdom are great and i actually remember sort of liking that whiny "o gavin why won't you marry me" song on the next record

yeah despite how much i never ever want to move back to california i'm happy i grew up there

everclear's "santa monica" has a nostalgic effect too, forgot about that one
