I was totally the biggest Warrant Fan in NH once...until I met them ;P spitcurl December 18 2008, 16:45:28 UTC
Wow...my jr. high years just flashed before my eyes!

add:

Love Song -- Tesla (Is "Signs" a ballad?)
What It Takes -- Aerosmith
Angel -- Aerosmith
Janie's Got a Gun -- Aerosmith
One -- Metallica
The Unforgiven -- Metallica
Nothing Else Matters -- Metallica

moving slowly out of that era into the next one:
Black Gold -- Soul Asylum
Hey Jealousy -- Gin Blossoms
MMMMmmmmMMMMMmmm -- Test Crash Dummies
And pretty much everything by Tori Amos (which pretty much catalogs how I got from one era to the other, except for NIN & the hard stuff!)

Hmmm....
some of those are too late...and not in the same vain of the Metal ballad.
One? that's no ballad yo. :D

and Tori wouldn't count at all...that's never metal :)

I realize that the second list isn't the exact genre/era (Tori included), but for me, one led to the other. The first list, except for maybe the last 2 Metallica songs, were totally the same years' as your first list though (on par w/Skid Row, GnR, etc.).

And One -- ended heavy, but for Metallica at the time, it was still rather their "ballad", the moment when they got dramatic and it became a commercial hit. It was the crossover melodic tune that got the girl metalheads into the band (like me). Not quite as sappy as the others, but then neither is the band. ;)

Also, tori had a rock/light metal band in the 80s. So though her solo sound wasn't, I really feel like her solo ballads came from the same earlier influence as much of the LA rock scene, where she spent that decade.

Which is not to say she's metal, but that a little metal in her is the reason she drew part of the fanbase she did.
