The response to Obama's election in London has been really heart warming. I work in Brixton and when I got off the train yesterday there was an older black lady with her jacket open proudly displaying an Obama t-shirt. A young black man ran up to her with a huge grin on his face explaining that he just had to stop and talk to her about it. I think ( Read more... ) -
travel plannin'
Ok, we've decided on our post-Thanksgiving destination now and it's the Carolinas. The Monday after Thanksgiving we will get on a train from Chicago through the mountains of West Virginia to North Carolina. We fly back to London from Raleigh-Durham on the 10th of December. Last weekend I went to End of the Road. It was amazing. Bon Iver, Hawk and a Hacksaw, Dirty Three, Kimya Dawson, Jeffrey Lewis, Mountain Goats, HOLY SHIT! I decided to listen to this Magnetic Fields album today and had almost forgotten how amazing it is and just how many memories it evokes. But listening to it after watching Persepolis last night has left me feeling a weird sense of nostalgia (the best way I can describe it). So I've run into the dude who sits on his stoop a few times at the shop on my days off. He always asks me if I'm working when I see him and approves of me when I say no. lament for the midwest (but it's positive)
One of the things that I cannot get over after moving to the UK is the horrible, horrible shit they pass off as corn on the cob here. I may have said it here before, but it's basically the stuff we feed pigs. And I wonder if the lack of awareness here stems from the senseless use of canned corn in so many gross things. My partner and I like to come back to the US for Thanksgiving. There is nothing like it here in the UK and it gets us out of family Christmases, which are a million times more stressful and full of baggage.
