i think i read somewhere that bbc does not care so much for the rating as long as the show increases its popularity around the world .is this true

Since Merlin is shown in around 180 countries It has a very strong audience base outside UK.And its production company is Shine.But I believe a modest rating in the UK is required for it to get upto 5 series.
