Back when Greece was a happenin' place and their society thrived, their gods were true gods, in the sense that people believed in them, prayed to them, worshiped them, etc
( Read more... )
And yet, multiple gods are still around. How about Wiccan? That is a religion based on various goddesses, as well as Hinduism.
I believe it has to do with the invasion of Christianity. Look at Romans and Greeks of modern times, their dominant religion is Christian. Perhaps missionaries were able to convince everyone so throughly that over time, the old gods and goddesses just faded out. If you look at Africa today, middle Africa, there are still tribes that believe in gods and goddesses. But as more and more missionaries come in to those tribes, they become convinced that there is only God and Christ. Give it a few hundred years and you see that African gods have become no more than myths as well.
I still believe in the Greek Gods......Christianity took over and made it illegal to worship the Greek Gods- so they vanished. They have been looked upon as myths because that is what the CHRISTIAN society wants. What wasn't related to Christianity was made into "myth" to scare little children into behaving- nad scare them into believing in the "power" of Christ. It IS rare that you find someone who still believes in them.
I doubt it'll happen again though...Christianity is too powerful to be taken down now.
I was telling gallyko what's true of history is true of religion, it's written by the victor. Christianity won out over the Greeks, and so the Greek gods were reduced to "myth."
And maybe it's only a matter of time before science dismisses everything as myth. Or the end of the world, second coming or not.
but what if science is myth? isnt it constantly finding fallacies? the earth used to revolve around the sun remember? our body used to be made of elementals. we are constantly finding our scientific ideas as being flawed.
