A big shakeup

1. Thanks to a complicated series of events, I'll be teaching high school next year. Wow. Never done that before, and I haven't a clue how to teach it! On Tuesday, I'm heading up to the school to meet some new colleagues, observe, and get a feel for it. I was shocked and quite wary when I got the reassignment, but now I'm starting to get excited. I have used the carpet cleaning machines in the past before we moved to the house of all tile and hardwood (hooray!). Hot water/steam cleaners are better than cold water systems. Don't leave the steamer in one place too long: it soaks the carpet and takes forever to dry. Do the carpet cleaning on a really dry day, not a rainy day.

Sorry to hear your Kindle's not so much fun. You do have a case? My case with the built-in light is what makes me love my Kindle. Holding it is like holding a paper book, only tonnes lighter.

I hear you about crazy book prices, although some of those might be starting to come down now that more of the publishers are backing off of their crazy scheme on pricing. In the meantime, you can download fanfic in .mobi format from Archive of Our Own. I love this feature!

I've done the carpet cleaning thing in one of the houses I rented! It is literally almost horrific how you can see the difference. Just make sure you keep the water clean, and buy an extra bottle of Rug Doctor - you always need a liiiiittle bit more than you expect.

Good luck with the teaching job. Re the carpet cleaning, doing it with a store bough machine does an okay job, but it tends to leave residue and will get dirty much faster. Proffessional is best. If they try to upsell you, just say no. They cant argue with that.

I'd say it's worth it to pay someone to do the rooms IF they did as thorough a job as you do. But they usually don't. When we rent one, we go over every room two, if not three or four times. You can still see it pulling out dirt. But it is a labor-intensive process, and a pain to do.

It definitely gets your floors clean, though!

I've used the carpet cleaner machine - rented it from my local grocery store. Rental and extra cleaning stuff was about $50/day. It was idiot proof easy to use and surprisingly quick. I ended up doing the rooms I had planned, had lots of cleaner left over. So I did the rest of my house. No way would a service have been as good.

I did have a buddy who spilled dirty water back on their carpet - so make sure you understand how to work it. ALSO - you have to be careful not to soak the carpet. You don't want the padding to get real wet as it can cause mold or buckling.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Just pick a dry day when you can open all your windows.
